NEW COMMIT: The University of Virginia has scored a new verbal commitment for their Class of 2027 from Olympic Trials qualifier Will Thompson of Chapel Hill, North Carolina.

He will join California native Simon Lins in Charlottesville at the start of the 2023-24 season.

Regarding his commitment, he said:

“I am super excited to announce my verbal commitment to study and swim at the University of Virginia. I would like to thank God, my family, coaches, friends, and teachers that have helped me get to this point. I am truly blessed and can’t wait to be a part of the UVA family. GO HOOS!”

A talented backstroker and freestyler, Thompson does his club swimming with the TAC Titans and had a phenomenal showing at Huntsville Futures this past summer where he earned best times in all of his events and collected three bronze medals. Last short course season, he raced to fourth in the 200 back at Cary Sectionals.

His best times include:

  • 200 back – 1:46.37
  • 100 back – 48.30
  • 50 back – 23.45
  • 100 fly – 49.99
  • 200 free – 1:40.75
  • 100 free – 45.28
  • 50 free – 20.66

Currently a junior at Carrboro High School, Thompson placed second in the 100 free and fourth in the 100 back as a sophomore at the North Carolina 1A/2A State Championships. He helped his team earn the state title by swimming on the winning 4×50 medley and 4×100 free relays, too.

Under head coach Todd DeSorbo, the Cavaliers finished fourth at the 2021 ACC Championships.
