US Open Day 3 Prelims: Regan Smith Aiming For Victorious Double

The 2022 US Open continued on Friday with Day 3 from Greensboro Aquatic Center in Greensboro, N.C.

The Day 3 prelims session had heads in the men’s and women’s 400 IM, 100 butterfly, 200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke and 100 backstroke for a packed morning in the pool.

Here is a look at what happened in each event at the US Open Day 3 prelims:

Day 2 recap

US Open: Women’s 400 IM

After an epic battle with Katie Ledecky in the 400 freestyle on Thursday, Canada’s teen sensation Summer McIntosh claimed the top seed in the 400 IM. She touched the wall in 4:38.72holding off the field by nearly five seconds.

Florida’s Emma Weyant took the second seed in 4:43.13, followed by Kathryn Hazle (4:50.55).

Men’s 400 IM

After a strong performance in the 200 IM on Thursday, Sun Devil Aquatics’ Chase Kalisz took the top seed in the 400 IM on Friday morning. He finished the race in 4:20.58 to hold off the field by a second.

Tennessee’s Landon Driggers took the second seed in 4:21.54, followed by Texas A&M’s Baylor Nelson (4:21.85).

US Open: Women’s 100 Butterfly

Three swimmers broke a minute in the prelims of the women’s 100 butterfly, setting up an intriguing final.

Sun Devil Aquatics’ Regan Smith took the top seed in 58.07, still a second ahead of the other two.

Louisville’s Gabi Albiero took the second seed in 59.27, followed by Beata Nelson (59.44).

Men’s 100 Butterfly

Cardinal Aquatic’s Zach Harting claimed the top seed in the 100 butterfly. He finished in 51.99, setting himself up for a good final.
NC State’s Luke Miller took the second seed in 52.38.

Fellow Cardinal Aquatic swimmer Nicholas Albiero took the third seed in 52.51, just minutes after a strong swim from his sister as the family looks for a big final.

Kazakhstan’s Mussin Adilbek was fourth (52.67) followed by Canada’s Josh Liendo (52.80).

US Open: Women’s 200 Free

Katie Ledecky cruised to the top seed in the 300 freestyle. She got to the wall in 1:57.70 to finish more than a second ahead of the field.

NCAP’s Erin Gemmell took the second seed at 1:58.90, followed by Tide’s Leah Hayes (2:00.02).

Men’s 200 Free

Olympian Jake Mitchell, now training in Florida, put together a strong 200 free to take the top seed. He got to the wall in 1:48.22 to hold off the field by a half second.

Brazil’s Guilherme Costa took the second spot in 1:48.79 and Zane Grothe was third in 1:49.12.

US Open: Women’s 100 Breaststroke

Ireland’s Mona McSharry used a strong first split to hold off the field in the 100 breaststroke. She got tot he wall in 1:08.24.

Duke’s Kaelyn Gridley took the second seed in 1:08.69, just ahead of pro Miranda Tucker (1:09.00).

Men’s 100 Breaststroke

Florida’s Aleksas Savickas took the top seed in the men’s breaststroke , finishing in 1:00.55.

Tennessee’s Lyubomir Epitropov took the second spot in 1:01.56 followed by Reid Mikuta (1:01.80).

US Open: Women’s 100 Backstroke

Regan Smith is in pursuit of a double title tonight and took her second top seed of the day in the 100 backstroke. Smith got to the wall in 59.65, about a second ahead of NC State’s Katharine Berkoff (59.64).

Tennessee’s Josephine Fuller took the third seed in 1:00.94.

Men’s 100 Backstroke

Daniel Diehl claimed the top seed in the 100 backstroke at 53.11, the only swimmer to break 54.

Evangelos Makrygiannis took the second seed in 54.53, followed by Notre Dame’s Tommy Janton (55.17).

There are so many errors in this. What is a 300 freestyle? And how was Regan Smith “about a second ahead” of NC State’s Berkoff when this article lists Regan’s time (59.65) as slower than Berkoff’s (59.64)?
