Siobhan Haughey Visits 50 And 200 Free Podiums In Canet; Sjostrom & Manaudou Win 50 Freestyle Crowns

Siobhan Haughey twice visited the podium and set a Hong Kong record while Sarah Sjostrom and Florent Manadou claimed the 50 free crowns on the first day of the Mare Nostrum tour in Canet.

Sjostrom set the tone with a morning prelim of 24.46 with the Swede returning in the evening to go 24.02 ahead of Siobhan Haughey – whose time of 24.56 was a Hong Kong record – and Michelle Coleman (24.71) with three-time world medallist Cate Campbell locked out of the podium by one place and 0.06 in 24.77.

Just 0.07 separated the first three home in the men’s race, headed by Florent Manaudou in 22.18 with Michael Andrew (22.22) and Dylan Carter (22.25) also on the podium.

Haughey then returned for the penultimate race of the session in Canet where she enjoyed a dominant win in the 200 free.

The Olympic silver medallist split 27.50/56.56 (29.06)/1:26.01 (29.45) before a final 50 of 29.41 steered her to 1:55.42.

Valentine Dumont (1:58.26) and Francisca-Soares Martins (1:58.55) completed the podium.

Katsuhiro Matsumoto won the men’s race in 1:47.33 ahead of Luiz-Altamir Melo (1:48.61) and Hadrien Salvan (1:48.62).

Christiansen Moves Through Field To Win

Henrik Christiansen came from fourth at the final turn come past the field and win the 400 free.

Kregor Zirk reached 350 in 3:22.32 ahead of Luke Turley (3:22.42), Krzysztof Chmielewski (3:22.52) and Christiansen (3:22.55) with the Norweigan’s final 50 of 27.98 steering him past the trio and to the touch in 3:50.53.

Zirk (3:50.58) and Chmielewski (3:50.99) completed the podium with Turley fading to fourth.

Tomoru Honda and Jakub Majerski couldn’t be separated in the men’s 100 fly with the pair sharing the top step in 52.14.

The Pole enjoyed a 0.39 lead at halfway in 24.50 to 24.89 only for the Japanese swimmer to come back with a second 50 of 27.25 as both men touched in 52.14.

Adrian Jaskiewicz was third in 52.38.

Hiroko Makino won the women’s 100 fly in 58.61 ahead of Helena Bach (58.86) and Kim Busch (59.22).

Marrit Steenbergen made up a deficit of 0.26 at the final turn to overhaul Fantine Lesaffre in the 200IM.

The European silver medallist blasted a final of 30.27 to come past the Frenchwoman and win in 2:11.06 to 2:11.86.

So Ogata came from 1.03 down at the 350 to win the men’s 400IM and lead a Japanese podium clean sweep in the process.

 Riku Yamaguchi led at the final turn in 3:44.28 to Ogata’s 3:45.31 only for the latter to come home in 30.35 for victory in 4:13.67, 0.01 ahead of Yamaguchi.

Taomoyuki Matsushita was third in 4:17.92.

McSharry Heads The 100 Breast

Mona McSharry was the only woman inside 1:07 en-route to the 100br title in Canet.

The 2021 world short-course bronze medallist split 31.59/34.59 en-route to 1:06.54 – 0.50secs outside the Irish record she set in May.

Behind her came Macarena Ceballos (1:07.68) and Reona Aoki (1:07.72).

Dawid Wiekiera won the men’s race in 1:00.79 ahead of Ippei Watanabe (1:00.96).

Analia Pigree opened the programme in Canet with a 50 back win in 217.92, the only sub-28 in the field, with Shane Ryan finishing first in the men’s in 25.58.

Emma Terebo led home a French one-two in the women’s 200 back, touching in 2:12.10 to Pauline Mahieu‘s 2:12.66.

Antoine Herlem continued the French winning theme in the men’s race as the only man inside 2mins in 1:59.47.

Agostina Hein topped the 800 free fastest heat in 8:29.36
