Phoebe Bacon Wins Twice as Wisconsin, Northwestern Split

Phoebe Bacon won a pair of events as Wisconsin dominated Northwestern Saturday in a 205.5-93.5 win. The Wildcats’ men scored a win at the Soderholm Family Aquatic Center, though, by a score of 163.5-136.5.

Bacon, the American Olympian, clocked in at 51.04 seconds to dominate the 100 backstroke by more than three seconds. She likewise controlled the 200 individual medley with a time of 1:55.86 to get her hand to the wall first. Bacon swam butterfly on the Badgers’ victorious 400 medley relay.

Both winning Wisconsin relays included both Wanezeks. Abby Wanezek won the 100 freestyle, and Maggie Wanezek won the 200 backstroke back-to-back. Abby was third in the 100 back.

The Wisconsin women took control from the very beginning. Maddie Waggoner went 9:37.65 to edge teammate Paige McKenna by .02 seconds in a podium sweep of the 1,000 free. Abby Carlson led a 1-2-3 in the 200 free with her time of 1:45.81.

Wisconsin won all 12 women’s swimming events. Hazal Ozkan swept breaststroke in addition to her spot on the victorious 400 medley relay. Mackenzie McConagha took home both butterfly wins. Hailey Tierney went 22.32 to win the 50 free before leading off a 200 free relay that Carlson anchored, and Blair Stoneburg claimed the 500 free with Waggoner third.

The schools split diving. The Badgers found the platform event to their liking, with Ryane Neil winning with 235.95 points. Caroline Li of Northwestern scored 261.23 on 1-meter in a 1-2 with Shauntel Lim. Claire Mehok was second in both backstroke events for the Wildcats, and Lilly Mehok was second in the 200 fly.

On the men’s side, Northwestern won both relays in a display of depth. The 400 medley relay quartet of David Gerchik, Tyler Lu, Stuart Seymour and Caden Duncan won in 3:07.93, a race that was within a quarter of a second before Duncan split 42.31 coming home. Seymour, Duncan, Connor Schuster and Gal Shlegel finished it off with a win in the 200 free relay in 1:19.05, a winning margin of .19 seconds.

Seymour and Gerchik went 1-2 in the 100 back. Gerchik edged Oliver Kos in the 200 back, and Kos was second in the 200 free. Tyler Lu won the 100 breast, was second in the 200 breast and second in the 200 IM, with Kos third. Diego Nosack notched vital wins in the 200 fly and 500 free, while Duncan and Schuster went 1-2 in the 100 free. Adam Cohen led a sweep of the top three places in 1-meter diving with a score of 327.30.

Wisconsin picked up plenty of wins but didn’t have the depth to back it on the day. Yigit Aslan started with a win in the 1,000 free, followed by Nico Butera claiming the 200 free. Dominik Mark Torok had a solid day, winning the 200 IM and 200 breast with a runner-up result in the 200 fly. Cooper Scharff (19.67) and Ben Wiegand went 1-2 in the 50 free, and Charlie Jones claimed the 100 fly.
