Passages: Carmel Swimmer Michael Jent Dies After Injuries Sustained in Car Accident

Michael Jent, a 16-year-old student at Carmel High School and a member of the school’s swim team, died Sunday after he was involved in a car accident early Friday morning. Jent’s car crashed into an apartment building in Carmel, Ind., and he was taken to the hospital with serious injuries. He died from those injuries two days later.

“Our thoughts and prayers continue to be with the Jent family as well as the students and staff of Carmel High School as they continue to process this tragic loss,” Lt. Tim Byrne, with the Carmel Police Department, said in a release announcing Jent’s death Sunday.

Police responded to a report of a vehicle crashing into a building on the corner of Main Street and Old Meridian in Carmel at 5:19 a.m. Friday. An update later that day identified Jent as the driver and said, “The cause of the crash is still under investigation, but it is not believed to have been an intentional act.”

Following the incident, Carmel High School canceled Friday afternoon swim practice for Jent’s team and made counseling available for students and coaches.

Jent also competed for Carmel Swim Club and had raced in numerous competitions as recently as December. He had been a member of the high school team, one of the top programs in the country, since his freshman year.
