Louisville Adds Bryon Tansel as Associate Head Coach

Louisville on Tuesday hired Bryon Tansel as an associate head coach, joining coach Arthur Albiero’s staff.

Tansel spent the last five seasons as an assistant coach at Ohio State. He helped the Buckeyes finish ninth at men’s NCAAs in 2022, a third consecutive NCAA top-10 finish. The women’s team also finished seventh at NCAAs in 2021, winning a Big Ten title that year.

“A big thank you to Athletic Director Josh Heird and Head Coach Arthur Alberio for the opportunity to join the Cardinal family,” Tansel said in a university statement. “I have always observed Arthur and his staff as high-achieving, supportive and loyal to one another, and I embrace the chance to learn from one of the best in the sport. It is an honor to be able to join such an accomplished program and be invited into one that already feels like a unit. The culture, support, and expectation of excellence it takes to create such an atmosphere is no small feat and I am thrilled to be associated with the prestigious group. I am excited to bring my energy, work ethic, and experience to the University of Louisville and to its student-athletes My family and I cannot wait to build deeper relationships with this team and strive for future success. Go Cards!”

Before Ohio State, Tansel worked at LSU as an assistant for the sprint group in 2016-17. He spent the previous three seasons at Eastern Michigan University, helping the men’s program win MAC Championships in 2015 and 2016.

“After a lengthy and detailed national search, we found the right person to continue to elevate our program in Bryon Tansel,” Albiero said. “His proven track record in development and recruiting high achieving student-athletes is displayed in how the swimmers he worked with have excelled and that includes a current world record holder. More importantly, he is a family man with great character. He will be a fantastic addition to our staff, and to our Cardinal Family.”

Tansel swam for Oakland University, the native of Dundee, Michigan, graduating in 2008. He was the 2005 Summit League Swimmer of the Year and a two-time team captain.

He started his coaching career with stops at Dallas Mustangs Swim Team’s national group and Dallas Aquatic Masters. He was a volunteer assistant at Richmond University and coached at Poseidon Swimming Inc. He earned a master’s degree in sport management at EMU.

Tansel is the latest departure from Columbus, with Matt Bowe also leaving for the University of California.
