Delaney Schnell, Nick Harris Wrap up USA Diving Nationals with Titles

Delaney Schnell and Nick Harris added titles on the final night of USA Diving Winter Nationals in Morgantown, West Virginia, on Sunday.

The Olympian Schnell prevailed in the women’s 10-meter platform competition. Harris picked up the men’s 1-meter springboard crown.

Schnell picked up her first individual senior national title and fourth overall. An Olympic silver medalist in platform synchro in Tokyo, Schnell scored 646.40 points. She was well clear of runner-up Jordan Skilken the entire way, her winning margin at more than 80 points. Daryn Wright earned bronze

Schnell sealed the win by scoring 72 points on an inward 3.5 tuck in the final round. She didn’t score fewer than 67.20 points in any of her five dives in finals.

“I really just wanted to take it one dive at a time and try to learn from prelims because it was a little bit of a tough go. It was just putting five dives on my head,” Schnell said. “It felt really good to get back on the individual stage and show people what I’m made of.”

The University of Texas’s Skilken leapt from fourth after prelims to take silver. Wright gave Purdue three finishers in the top six.

Harris earned his first title by scoring 699.00 points. The Longhorn diver edged out Jack Ryan by 2.60 points. His return of 59.20 points on his final dive was just enough to hold off Ryan, who tallied 67.50.

A native of Pennsylvania, Harris was 12th on 1-meter a year ago. He also picked up bronze, with Max Fowler, on 3-meter synchro this week.

Clayton Chaplin earned the bronze medal.

“Some people don’t like looking at the scores, but personally, I like looking at the scores in between every dive. It helps me know if I need a really good dive, if I need to focus more,” Harris said. “I knew on that last dive that I needed over 55 points. It made me a little more nervous to be honest, but it also gave me a little more adrenaline. I’d say it gave me a little more energy on that last dive.”
