NCAA Div. I Men: Stanford Downs Michigan, 135-100

Stanford, CA., Jan. 5. THE number-two ranked Stanford men's swimming team defeated No. 9 Michigan today, 135-100, in a dual meet held at the Avery Aquatics Complex on the Stanford campus. Stanford is now 2-0 on the year, while Michigan falls to 1-3.

The Cardinal was led by seniors Adam Messner and Steven Brown, who picked up two wins each on the afternoon. Messner took top honors in the 200 free with a provisional NCAA qualifying time of 1:36.82 and
won the 500 free with a season-best time of 4:24.82 (also provisionally qualifying NCAA time). Steven Brown won both the 200 IM (1:49.60) and 200 fly (1:49.64).

"I was very pleased with our performance today," said head coach Skip Kenney. "It was a great team effort. Our freshmen really stepped up for us."

Stanford got a solid performance from frosh Bobby O'Bryan who took first in the 50 free (:20.71) and 100 free (:44.73). O'Bryan's time in the 100 free is a provisionally qualifying NCAA time and a season high. Freshman Markus Rogan took top honors in the 200 back with a provisional NCAA qualifying time of 1:45.19.

The Cardinal opened the meet with a victory in the 400 Medley Relay (Randall Bal, Anthony Robinson, Dan Westcott and Andrew Schnell) in a time of 3:17.41 (a NCAA provisional qualifying time).

Michigan's Chris Thompson, the bronze medalist in the 1500 meter free at the Sydney Olympics, won the 1000 free in a time of 8:57.18.

Stanford sophomore diver Gavin Olmstead finished second on both the one-meter (184.50) and three-meter (186.00) to lead the Cardinal divers. Freshman Brian Ferris placed third in both events (one-meter, 166.20 and three-meter, 183.65). Freshman Jesse Fonner took fourth in the three-meter (165.90).
