Nathan Adrian Eyes Pool Return; Under Surveillance Plan

2012 Olympic Champion Nathan Adrian announced via social media on Monday that he was going to be “under close surveillance” and will be having lots of doctor appointments and scans over the next several years.

Adrian wrote in full,

“After meeting with doctors last week and reviewing the results from the pathology, we have determined the best route moving forward is close surveillance! I will have lots of doctors appointments and scans for the next several years and if all goes well they will prove to be trivial and uneventful.”

“This journey is far from over but I did want to take a moment to thank everyone for their support and kindness through all this. I have been doing my best to get back to normal life but now that this decision has been made, we can get moving 100% on achieving my goals in and out of the water.”

Adrian was diagnosed with testicular cancer on January 25 and underwent surgery to remove some of his lymph nodes on January 29. Adrian quickly made a return to the weight room on February 4 and has been in good spirits throughout this whole process.

A couple weeks ago, Swimming World caught up with two-time Olympian Eric Shanteau to talk about his own cancer diagnosis and how he was able to delay treatment in order to compete at the 2008 Olympics.

Shanteau revealed he was only diagnosed with stage one testicular cancer a week before the 2008 Olympic Trials. He made the Olympic Team in the 200 breaststroke and was able to compete in Beijing after being on an intensive modified surveillance plan at training camp.

Shanteau was cleared to swim at the Olympics a couple days before the team was set to leave California for a training camp in Singapore.

Shanteau went into surgery six days after coming home from the Olympics and was declared cancer free in mid-September of 2008. With stage one, all Shanteau needed was a single surgery, and it appears that is all Nathan Adrian has needed as well.

Shanteau also said he was on a surveillance plan that lasted nine years.

Adrian has not indicated if he will be swimming in any meets in the near future as the next big meet would be the TYR Pro Swim Series stop in Des Moines, Iowa, March 6-9. Adrian is also listed on the roster for the World Championships team this summer as well as the Pan American Games.
