Moravcova, Moses Romp at World Cup

COLLEGE PARK, MARYLAND, Nov. 15. MARTINA Moravcova, Slovakia's first-ever Olympic medalist, was a triple winner on the first night of competition at the FINA World Cup 2 swim meet held at College Park, Maryland. American Olympian Ed Moses won two events.

Moravcova, who won two silver medals in Sydney two
months ago, overwhelmed the field to set a US Open
record in the 200m freestyle (1:56.14). She came back
to notch victories in the 100m butterfly (58.46) and 50m free (24.81).

Moses, who won Olympic gold in the 4x100m medley relay and silver in the 100m breaststroke and swims for the local Curl-Burke Swim Club, swept to victory tonight in the 50m (27.63) and 200m breast (2:11.54). He owns the world record in the 200 breast.

"My times are faster now than they were last year at
this meet," Moses said. "Some of the other Olympians are taking a long break, but I wanted to get back in the water and put some good work in looking ahead to the World Championships next summer. I'm taking this fall seriously. It sets me up for the season."

Fifteen year-old phenom, Michael Phelps, who placed fifth in Sydney in the 200 meter butterfly, easily won his event tonight, using his patented come-from-behind strategy to overtake Australia's Heath Ramsay and win in 1:55.98.

Germany's Jirka Letzin, who took all three individual medley races at last week's World Cup 1 meet in Rio de Janeiro, won the 100 and 400 meter individual medley races here to remain undefeated on the World Cup circuit this year.
