Michigan Rolls To Victory In The Orange Bowl Swim Classic

The men’s and women’s Michigan teams dominated at the Orange Bowl Swim Classic in the Florida Keys at Key Largo’s Jacobs Aquatic Center. The ninth ranked Wolverine women beat four other teams, racking up 265 points. The sixth ranked Michigan men beat three teams, finishing with 231 points.

The teams competed in a short course meters pool on Jan. 3.

Michigan got off to a hot start, winning the women’s 200-meter medley relay in 1:54.99. The team consisted of Clara Smiddy, Emily Kopas, Zoe Mattingly and Maddy Frost. Air Force won the men’s event. The team of Devon Davis, Michael Barnosky, Steffen Mount and Jordan Dahle posted a time of 1:40.48.

Michigan’s Ryan Gillian set a meet record in the third event of the day: the women’s 400-meter freestyle. The 20-year-old posted a time of 4:15.21, winning by over three seconds.

After helping Michigan to a win in the 200-meter medley relay, Smiddy set a meet record in the women’s 100-meter backstroke. She posted a time of 1:01.12.

Meet records fell in both the men’s and women’s 50-meter breaststroke. Michigan’s Emily Kopas set the women’s record with a time of 32.04. On the men’s side, Michael Barnosky of Air Force touched in 27.97.

Ali Deloof took the women’s 50-meter backstroke title for the Wolverines, touching in a meet record time of 28.32. Michigan’s Paul Powers set the men’s 50-meter freestyle record with a time of 22.19.

In the women’s 200-meter individual medley, Michigan’s Siobhan Haughey set a meet record, winning the race in 2:14.64.

The meet ended with the 200-meter freestyle relay.

Michigan won the women’s race with a meet record time of 1:44.16. The team consisted of Frost, Catie Deloof, Haughey and Ali Deloof.

The Wolverines also won on the men’s side. The team of Vinny Tafuto, Powers, Colin Eaton and Jeremy Raisky posted a time of 1:31.55.

Air Force finished second on the men’s side, while George Mason finished second in the women’s team standings.
