Max Weinrich, Kaylee Bishop Start 2023 USA Diving Nationals with Platform Synchro Crown

Max Weinrich and Kaylee Bishop were crowned mixed synchronized 10-meter platform champions Wednesday night on the opening day of 2023 USA Diving Nationals.

Krysta Palmer and Jack Ryan added gold in the mixed 3-meter synchro event. It’s the opening day of eight for the national championships hosted by the Aquatic Center at Mylan Park in Morgantown, West Virginia. Both teams qualify for the World Aquatics Championships in Fukuoka, Japan, this summer.

Weinrich, who dives at Indiana University and the Johansen Diving Academy, and Coral Spring Diving’s Bishop scored 247.62 points. That put them a little less than six points up on Bailey Cranford and Aidan Wang. Weinrich and Bishop trailed after three rounds but took the lead with a 51-point inward three-and-a-half tuck.

“Honestly, I’m speechless,” Bishop, who is 16 years old, told USA Diving. “I’m still shaking. I just wanted to go out and have fun, and we did. I’m very excited.”

“I knew we could win the event,” Weinrich said. “I knew we had what it takes. It just comes down to performing in the moment. I think we held our composure really well, and I’m super happy with it.”

Ryan and Palmer faced stiff competition in Kassidy Cook and Tyler Downs, a pair of Olympians. Ryan, who dives for Stanford, and the 30-year-old Palmer made a fast pair, the idea raised after Ryan competed against divers from Nevada in NCAA Zones this year. They trained together in Nevada, where Palmer, a bronze medalist at the Tokyo Olympics, is based and coaches.

They scored 60 points or more on all three optional dives, surging from third place after three rounds. They tallied 282.27 to earn the win.

“It’s awesome,” Ryan said. “It’s hard getting your butt kicked on every dive, but otherwise it’s just awesome diving with Krysta.”

Cook and Downs finished 4.23 points back in second. Bridget O’Neil and Noah Duperre were third with 269.46.
