NEW COMMIT: West Virginia University has received their first verbal commitment for the fall of 2022 from Makena Malkemus of Buckeye, Arizona, who will join the Mountaineers as a member of the Class of 2026.

Regarding her commitment, she said:

“I am beyond excited to announce my verbal commitment to continue my academic and athletic career at West Virginia University!! I am thankful for my family, coaches, and friends who have been a part of this amazing journey. I am so blessed to call WVU my home for the next four years!! Go Mountaineers! #hailwv”

Malkemus does her club swimming with the YMCA Westside Silver Fins and most recently earned a pair of best times at Austin Sectionals where she finaled in three events. She also placed eighth in the 50 free at Arizona Seniors before going on to take 19th in that event at Four Corner Sectionals last short course season.

Her best times include:

  • 50 free: 23.76
  • 100 free: 51.72
  • 100 back: 57.94
  • 200 free: 1:52.15
  • 200 back: 2:02.48

Also competing for Verrado High School, Malkemus was the 100 free runner-up at the Arizona DII State Championships as a freshman.

Malkemus is a great addition to the Mountaineers’ lineup both individually and on relays. She would’ve been their fourth-fastest 50 and 200 freestyler last year, also ranking fourth in the 200 back and sixth in the 100 free.
