Long-Time Swimming World Contributor Bill Bell Passes Away

Swimming World has sadly learned that Bill Bell, long-time contributor and super-fan of swimming, recently passed away in Los Angeles. Bill worked for Swimming World Magazine in the late 1970s and early 1980s as an editorial assistant and statistical editor. He was best known for his lists of all-time top swims, in a series known as “Bill Bell’s Top Times.” Check out some of the more recent entries:

Bell was a graduate of San Diego State but a fervent UCLA Bruins fan. As is evident in the photo above, Bell was also a fervent UCLA Bruins fan, and he was as massive a swim geek as they come. His lists of all-time top performances sometimes ran thousands deep, and he always had a witty remark to add about an individual’s performance.

All of us at Swimming World express our condolences to Bell’s friends and relatives, and the entire swimming community will miss his contributions to the sport.
