Kristy, Jenny Honored

October 17. THE University of Georgia’s Kristy Kowal and Stanford graduate Jenny Thompson were honored this weekend for their achievements.

Kowal, the Bulldog co-captain who set American and NCAA records in the 100 and 200 meter (sc) breaststroke events and swam on Georgia’s world record-setting 400 medley relay, was named the NCAA’s Woman of the Year.

Kowal, who set an American record in winning the silver medal in the 200 meter breaststroke at the Sydney Olympic Games, also won an NCAA post-graduate scholarship.

Thompson, who won three relay gold medals along with a bronze to bring her career total to a record 10—more than any other American woman in any sport—was chosen as Sportswoman of the Year by the Women’s Sports Foundation. Thompson, 27, plans to swim another year before enrolling at the Columbia University Medical School next August.

Jenny Thompson had a big lead in the 100 Fly.
