Jack Conger dethroned Michael Phelps in this morning’s 100-meter fly prelim at USA Nationals. For the time being, Conger leads the event with a 51.97 heading into finals. In Phelps’s shadow, Conger blasted a huge 1:54.54 200-meter fly and dropped 5.73 seconds from his entry time last night. Conger added 0.33 seconds this morning, but it was enough to lead second-place Phelps. Phelps swam a 52.12 in a controlled race.

Conger: 24.36/27.61

Phelps: 24.86/27.26

Tonight’s race should be a fun showdown of the nation’s top butterfly talent.
