Italian Duo Claims Gold in Synchro Mixed Duet Technical Final

Italy claimed their first synchronized swimming gold medal of the 2017 FINA World Championships on day three of competition. The Italian duo of Manila Flamini and Giorgio Minisini claimed a narrow victory over Russia’s Mikhaela Kalancha and Aleksandr Maltsev for the gold.

Flamini and Minisini finished the competition with a total of 90.2979 points to take home Italy’s first ever mixed duet technical gold medal. 2017 marked only the second time the mixed duet technical was a part of the competition schedule, with the first time being in Kazan in 2015.

Minisini explained to FINA and the associated press in Budapest,

“Italy had two bronze medals in Kazan. But we wanted to be better. Every day of the year we worked hard to get on the top. It was very important for us. After all we didn’t expect this victory. Usually it takes 3-4 years for a team to improve and to get 5 points more for the routine. We did 86 point for the technical program in Kazan. Doing 90 in this competition is something unbelievable. We couldn’t even think about such high scores.”

The Russian duo of Kalancha and Maltsev settled for a close second with a total of 90.2639 points, while the USA’s Bill May and Kanako Kitao Spendlove finished third overall with a total of 87.6682 points.
