Iceland Downs Faroe Islands, 99-81, in Short Course Meter Dual Meet

KLAKSVIK, Faroe Islands, October 8. IN an exciting head-to-head matchup of Iceland and the Faroe Islands, the team from Iceland proved to have just a bit more in the tank than the hosts in an 99-81 victory. The meet took place in short course meter format, and Iceland's dominance in the women's events proved to be too much for Faroe Islands' strength in the men's events.

Iceland's Ingbjorg Kristin Jonsdottir proved to be the top sprinter among the women with a title trifecta on the day. She won the women's 50 free (25.99), 50 back (28.53) and 50 fly (28.75). Inga Elin Cryer then won the women's 100 IM (1:06.16) and 400 free (4:15.13) for Iceland, while Olof Edda Edvardsdottir took home the women's 200 breast (2:35.23) to complete an individual event sweep among the women.

Iceland also claimed the standard relay for the women as Ingbjorg Kristin Jonsdottir, Olof Edda Edvardsdottir, Snjolaug Tinna Hansdottir and Karen Sif Vilhjalmsdottir won the women's 200 medley relay in 1:57.41.

Pal Joensen, the top star of the meet, won a pair of events for the Faroe Islands with victories in the men's 200 free (1:51.03) and 400 free (3:51.10). Teammate Magnus Jakupsson had a strong day for his squad with three wins of his own. He captured the title in the men's 50 back (26.21), 50 fly (25.18) and 100 fly (55.02).

Iceland, however, provided the margin of victory in the dual meet by holding serve with a couple of triumphs in the men's events after clean sweeping the women's titles. Jakub Johann Sveinsson won the men's 200 breast in 2:14.21, while Kolbein Hrafnkelsson, Jakob Johann Sveinsson, Agust Juliusson and Orri Freyr Gudmundsson snared the men's 200 medley relay in 1:43.11.

In a team-building mixed 8 x 50 freestyle relay, Faroe Islands won when Magnus Jakupsson, Kristina Eliasen, Pal Joensen, Birita Debes, Gudrun Mortensen, Hedin Olsen, Poula Mohr and Pauli Mohr took the title in 3:21.55.
