Swimming is a fun and rewarding sport that’s enjoyed by people of all ages and backgrounds. There’s nothing that compares to the weightless feeling of floating in a pool of water. No matter your age, you’re sure to enjoy a quick dip in the pool, lake or ocean. Here we’re going to take a look at 6 of the top reasons why you should swim.

Swimming Burns Calories

Still struggling to shed those unwanted pounds? Need an exercise regime that the whole family can enjoy? If so, swimming might be the solution to your problem. Just an hour of light-to-moderate swimming can burn as much as 500 calories. And if you really need to ramp up your weight loss efforts, you can swim harder and/or longer to burn an even greater number of calories.

Swimming provides Full-Body Workouts

There aren’t many activities which offer a full-body workout, but swimming is one of the few that falls under this category. It forces you to kick your legs, perform strokes with your arms, and shift your core from left to right, all of which encourages muscle growth and development. You can also go to a pool and “run” in the water. You get a great workout while protecting your joints. If you’re looking for a solid full-body workout that doesn’t require expensive weights or gym equipment, get in your bathing suit grab your swim goggles and hit the water!

Swimming Improves Heart Health

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), approximately 600,000 people in the U.S. die from heart disease each year, making it the leading cause of death for both men and women. Taking a dip in the pool, lake or ocean, however, can improve your heart health while lowering your risk of cardiovascular disease.

Swimming is a fun and rewarding sport that’s enjoyed by people of all ages and backgrounds. There’s nothing that compares to the feeling of floating in a pool of water. Whether you’re young, old or anywhere in between, you’re sure to enjoy a quick dip in the pool or ocean.

Swimming is a Low-Impact Sport

Swimming is considered a low-impact sport, meaning there’s little-to-no pressure placed on your joints. The buoyancy of the water counteracts the earth’s gravity, which in turn makes it feel like you are floating. Sure, your muscles may become sore after swimming for hours on end, but your joints and cartilage will remain safe and protected since there’s no pressure placed on them.

Note: approximately 90% of your body is buoyant when swimming.

Swimming is Social

There’s a social aspect to swimming that’s often overlooked. Whether you’re at the beach, pool or lake, you’re almost certain to find other people enjoying the water as well. After spending a day at a crowded pool, you’ll meet tons of new people.

Swimming Cools You Down

There’s a real threat of heat stroke or severe dehydration when performing most outdoor sports and exercises on a hot summer day. Thankfully, this isn’t usually a problem with swimming, as the water naturally cools your body down. Your body will stay cool and comfortable, even if the mercury is rising that day.

Swimming requires very little equipment to participate at any level

Grab your suit, towel, flip flops and a good pair of swim goggles and you are set. If you wear prescription glasses or contacts, you can even purchase a pair of custom prescription swim goggles. Being able to see in the water makes it more enjoyable and safer.

David Moreno I do LOVE the sport…buttterfly and Breaststroke where my faves…it’s been years since I’ve swam a lap but I bet it’s like riding a bike except the drowning part when the stamina dies before you reach the other end of the pool ?
