FINA Suspends Nikolett Szepesi One Year Due to Doping/Retirement Rule Violation

LAUSANNE, Switzerland, January 27. FINA elected to suspend Hungary's Nikolett Szepesi for one year due to violation of FINA Rules DC 5.5.2 and DC 2.4. The suspension began on Jan. 22 of this year.

The organization rules that all results on the record for Szepesi since Jan. 22, 2009 will also be disqualified, including a forfeit of all medals, points and prizes accumulated from those performances.

Rules DC 5.5.2 and 2.4 require proper notification from a swimmer when they return from retiring from the sport. Szepesi retired from the sport after the 2008 European Short Course Championships, and returned to swim at the European Short Course Championships held in 2009. Unfortunately for the swimmer, she did not follow the proper protocol designed to eliminate any potential doping after retirement while off the out of competition testing radar.
