Commonwealth Games: Nicolas-Guy Turbide Wins S13 50 Free in .01 Thriller

Canada’s Nicolas-Guy Turbide came out on top Saturday in a scintillating men’s S13 50 freestyle at the Commonwealth Games.

In a final where the five participants were separated by just a half-second, Turbide got the win by a scant .01 seconds over Scotland’s Stephen Clegg.

The 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England, is one of the few events to have shared swimming and paraswimming competition, with two events each day. The men’s S13 50 free was the most entertaining race of the first two days of competition, though Saturday produced a world record courtesy of Katja Dedekind.

Men’s S9 100 backstroke

Timothy Hodge led the way in the first para event of the meet, dominating the field by nearly two seconds. His time of 1:01.88 got him gold in an event that he won bronze in at the 2022 World Para Swimming Championships.

Jesse Reynolds of New Zealand was second in 1:03.65. Barry McClements edged his way into bronze for Northern Ireland in 1:05.09.

Australia’s Emily Beecroft edged out Scotland’s Toni Shaw by .01 seconds for silver.

The 50 free featured reigning world champs in the S13 100 fly (Turbide) and S12 100 back (Clegg). Saturday, Turbide went 24.32 to get the win, just .01 up on Clegg.

A crowd of Aussies weren’t far behind. Third was Jacob Templeton in 24.47. Braedan Jason was fourth in 24.56, and Oscar Stubbs was the only one out of the leading group in fifth in 24.90.

The women’s event was a more dominant showing, thanks to Dedekind. The 20-year-old native of South Africa, swimming for Australia, followed up her three medals at the 2022 Para World Championships dominated the field in 26.56, more than a second up on the field. She also downed the S13 world record of 26.67, set by Italy’s Carlotta Gilli in 2018.

Second was England’s Hannah Russell in 27.67. Dedekind was joined on the podium by countrywoman Kirralee Hayes in 28.24.
