Big Ten Weekly Honors: Mackenzie Looze, Brendan Burns Lead Swimming Honorees

The Big Ten Conference announced its weekly swimming and diving awards.

Big Ten Women’s Swimmer of the Week
Mackenzie Looze, Indiana
Sr. –  Bloomington, Ind. – Bloomington South

  • Won the 200 individual medley (1:56.14) at the Ohio State Fall Invitational, posting an NCAA B-cut and the fastest time in the Big Ten this season
  • Placed second in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:08.64, an NCAA provisional time and the third-fastest time in the conference
  • Was part of the second-place 400 freestyle (3:14.99) and 800 freestyle (7:03.73) relay teams, securing an NCAA B-cut time in both while posting the league’s fastest time in the 800 freestyle relay and the second-fastest in the 400 freestyle relay
  • Finished third in the 400 individual medley with an NCAA provisional time of 3:33.45, the third-fastest time in the conference
  • Earns her first career Swimmer of the Week award
  • Last Indiana Women’s Swimmer of the Week: Noelle Peplowski (Jan. 15, 2020)

Big Ten Women’s Diver of the Week
Emily (Bretcher) Pfeiffer, Purdue
Gr. – Knoxville, Tenn. – L&N STEM Academy (Tenn.)

  • Won the 3-meter dive (362.75) at the Purdue Invitational
  • Placed third in the 1-meter competition (300.60)
  • Secured NCAA Zone qualifying scores in both events
  • Garners her seventh career Diver of the Week honor and her first of the season
  • Last Purdue Women’s Diver of the Week: Emily Bretcher (Feb. 5, 2021)

  • Earned a win and seven top-10 finishes at the Ohio State Fall Invitational
  • Touched first in the 200 breaststroke (2:08.40), posting an NCAA B-cut and the second-fastest time in the Big Ten

  • Helped Indiana win the Ohio State Fall Invitational with four wins and two second-place finishes
  • Contributed to the 400 medley relay with an NCAA A-cut time of 3:04.05, the second-fastest time in the NCAA and fastest time in the Big Ten this season
  • Won the 100 backstroke (1:40.27), posting an NCAA B-cut and the fastest time nationally
  • Won the 200 butterfly with an NCAA provisional time of 1:41.74, the second-fastest time in the conference and the sixth-fastest time nationally
  • Swam with the winning 800 freestyle relay team (6:17.27) that recorded an NCAA B-cut and posted the fastest time in the league and fourth-fastest nationally
  • Placed second in the 200 freestyle (1:33.04), recording an NCAA B-cut and the No. 2 time in the Big Ten
  • Was part of the second-place 200 medley relay team that clocked a 1:24.32, an NCAA provisional time and the second-best time in the conference
  • Earns his third career Swimmer of the Week award

Big Ten Men’s Diver of the Week
Tyler Downs, Purdue
Fr. – Ballwin, Mo. – Laurel Springs

  • Won two events to help Purdue win the Purdue Invitational
  • Won the 3-meter event, contributing to a 1-2-3 finish for Purdue in the competition while posting a 450.70 score in the prelims, the seventh-best mark in Purdue history
  • Won the platform competition with a score of 476.50, the fourth-best score in school history
  • Garners the third Diver of the Week honor of his career
  • Last Purdue Men’s Diver of the Week: Tyler Downs (Nov. 10, 2021)

Big Ten Men’s Freshman of the Week
Brady Samuels, Purdue
Muncie, Ind. – Delta (Ind.)

  • Recorded four top-two finishes individually and contributed to two relay wins in Purdue’s victory at the Purdue Invitational
  • Won the 100 butterfly with a school-record time of 45.66, clocking an NCAA B-cut and the 10th fastest time in the NCAA this season
  • Swam on the winning 200 freestyle relay (1:17.12) and 400 freestyle relay (2:51.18) teams for the Boilermakers, which each recorded NCAA provisional times that rank in the top 10 nationally
  • Placed second in the 50 freestyle (19.58), 100 freestyle (42.93) and 100 backstroke (46.68), posting NCAA B-cuts in all three events
  • Earns the first Freshman of the Week accolade of his career
  • Last Purdue Men’s Freshman of the Week: Tyler Downs (Oct. 27, 2021)
