Amherst Defeats Williams In Men’s NESCAC Match Up

The CSCAA‘s 22nd ranked Amherst College Jeffs narrowly defeated the 17th ranked Williams College Ephs Saturday afternoon in an intense NESCAC match up. The men competed in a 13 event format, swimming only the 200s of stroke.

Despite winning both relays, Williams lost the meet 124-113.

Williams got off to a quick start, as the team of Benjamin LinJake TamposiTimothy Kostolansky, and Nels Snyder won the 400 medley relay in a time of 3:25.15. Amherst’s squad of Matt HeiseElijah SpiroSam Spurrell, and Vic Sun swam a 3:27.99.

Amherst’s Connor Haley claimed the 1,000 in a time of 9:52.82. Williams’ Kenny Liu and Bobby Rowledge finished second and third (9:56.19 and 10:00.49).

Williams swimmers claimed first and second in the 200 freestyle. Grant Johnson swam a time of 1:43.97 and Curtis Maher was a 1:44.34. Charlie Seltzer was third in 1:45.32.

Amherst fired back in the 50 freestyle, taking the top two spots. Kaison Ilfill posted a swift 21.22 and Alex Dreisbach was just behind in a 21.41. The Eph’s Jamie Finnegan finished third in a time of 21.63.

The 200 IM was another huge event for Amherst as Greg Han lead a 1-2 finish with his time of 1:54.71. Jeff Anderson swam a 1:55.30. Knox Young posted a 1:56.04 for third place points.

Amherst diver Asher Lichtig was impressive on both boards. The senior posted a score of 272.70 on the 1 meter and 309.23 on the 3 meter. On the 1 meter he was followed by Williams’ Andrew Lyness with a score of 217.95 while his teammate Jake Meyer posted a score of 141.00. Lyness scored a 177.23 on the 3 meter and Meyer was third with 129.60 points.

Amherst swept the 200 butterfly. Spurrell swam a 1:54.70, just ahead of his teammate Anderson who posted a 1:54.71. John Janezich raced to a third place time of 1:56.53.

Williams worked to change the momentum in the 100 freestyle. Lin won the event in a time of 46.24 while his teammate Finnegan was second in 47.03. Amherst’s Ilfill swam a 47.30 for third.

Matt Heise scored important points for the Jeffs, winning the 200 backstroke in a time of 1:54.15. Williams took second and third as Colin Hogan and Lin swam a 1:54.67 and a 1:56.58.

The top three in the 500 freestyle were separated by less than two seconds. Johnson and Kevin Liu went 1-2 for Williams (4:48.88 and 4:49.67) while Haley was third for Amherst (4:50.34).

Han secured the meet for Amherst, winning the 200 breaststroke in a time of 2:05.50. After leading through the first 125 yards, Williams’ Tamposi took second in a 2:05.88. Amherst’s Josh Chen finished third with a time of 2:09.12.

Williams’ team of Josh Hammond, Finnegan, Snyder, and Johnson closed out the meet with a 400 freestyle relay victory, finishing in a time of 3:08.30. Amherst was just behind as Ilfill, Anderson, Heise, and Alex Dreisbach posted a final time of 3:08.66.
