ACC Swimming Championships Day 2 Prelims: Kate Douglass, Gretchen Walsh Tie ACC Record in 50 Freestyle

The 2022 ACC Swimming and Diving Championships continued on Wednesday with the first preliminary session of the meet from the McAuley Aquatic Center at Georgia Tech.

Defending NCAA champion Virginia looks to take control early in the women’s meet, while NC State, Virginia Tech and Louisville will look to play spoiler. The Wolfpack will fight with the same teams in the men’s meet.

The first morning session of the meet consisted of the women’s and men’s 500 freestyle, 200 IM and 50 freestyle before men’s 1-meter diving.

Virginia’s Kate Douglass and Gretchen Walsh highlighted the morning by tying for the ACC meet record in the 50 freestyle.

ACC Women’s 500 Freestyle

Virginia has a couple of studs in the event, but it was Louisville sophomore Liberty Williams, who took the top seed in the 500 free. Williams touched the wall in 4:40.53 after holding a 28-second pace until the final 50 where she went 27.90.

Virginia freshman Emma Weyant was right on her heels, finishing in 4:41.39. She also had all 28 splits except for a 27.68 on the final 50, which could lead to an exciting finish in the finals.

Virginia junior Madelyn Donohoe took the third seed at 4:42.50, followed by Virginia Tech’s Chase Travis (4:42.73) and Reka Gyorgy (4:43.93). NC State rounded out the top eight with Yara Hierath (4:44.22), Katharine Foley (4:44.72) and Brooke Travis (4:45.06).

ACC Men’s 500 Freestyle

The NC State Wolfpack made a huge move early, putting four swimmers in the top five seeds in the men’s 500 freestyle.

Junior Ross Dant took the top seed in 4:12.03 with only one of his 50 splits over 26 seconds. Meanwhile, sophomore John Gallant had a 24.79 closing split to touch the wall with the second seed (4:13.15). Sophomore James Plage took the third seed in 4:14.32), while fifth-year senior Eric Knowles took the fifth seed in 4:15.48, just behind Virginia Tech senior Antani Ivanov (4:15.02).

Virginia’s Jack Wright took the sixth seed (4:15.65), followed by Georgia Tech’s Batur Unlu (4:15.66) and Mert Kilavuz (4:16.14).

ACC Women’s 200 IM

Virginia took the top two spots in the women’s 200 IM, led by Alex Walsh, who made the Olympics in this event. Walsh finished in 1:54.31 to hold off the field by nearly a second.

She started with a dominating 24.39 split to open the race and never looked back.

Teammate Ella Nelson took the second seed in 1:55.18, just one hundredth of a second ahead of Louisville junior Abigail Hay (1:55.19).

Duke sophomore Sarah Foley took the fourth seed (1:55.41), followed by a quartet of NC State swimmers — Abigail Arens (1:55.76), Kathleen Moore (1:56.07), Julia Poole (1:56.51) and Grace Sheble (1:56.55).

ACC Men’s 200 IM

Virginia Tech’s Carles Coll Marti took the top seed in the men’s 200 IM, touching the wall in 1:42.14. His time is about a second off of the meet record, set by Andreas Vazaios in 2017 (1:41.25), which could be in danger in the finals.

NC State took five of the next six spots. Freshman Samuel Hoover took the the second seed in 1:43.37, followed by freshman teammate Arsenio Bustos (1:43.41).

Louisville senior Daniel Sos split up the Wolfpack quintet by taking the fourth seed (1:43.45), tied with NC State sophomore Michael Moore.

NC State senior Giovanni Izzo took the sixth seed (1:43.83), followed by teammate Noah Bowers (1:44.07) and Georgia Tech fifth-year Caio Pumputis took the eighth seed (1:44.49).

ACC Women’s 50 Freestyle

Virginia’s Kate Douglass and Gretchen Walsh both broke the ACC meet record in the 50 freestyle, tying for the top seed in 21.25.

They broke Douglass’ mark of 21.50 set at last year’s meet. Her overall ACC record is 21.09 set at last year’s NCAA Championships.

It was the first of three ties in the event and should be an extremely intriguing showdown in the final.

NC State junior Katharine Berkoff was just behind at 21.69, tying North Carolina’s Grace Countie for the third seed at 21.69.

There was another tie for the fifth seed as Louisville’s Gabrielle Albiero and NC State’s Kylee Alons both finished in 21.79.

Virginia’s Alexa Cuomo took the seventh seed (21.86) and Virginia Tech senior Anna Landon took eighth (22.21).

ACC Men’s 50 Freestyle

NC State freshman David Curtiss put together a stellar 50 freestyle to take the top seed in 18.77. He was 11 hundredths off the meet record set by Ryan Held in 2017 (18.68).

Virginia sophomore Matt Brownstead took the second seed in 19.02 just ahead of Louisville’s Abdelrahman Elaraby (19.04).

NC State’s Nyls Korstanje took the fourth seed (1.912) just ahead of Virginia Tech’s Youssef Ramadan (19.13) and Virginia freshman Connor Boyle (19.19).

NC State’s Noah Henderson took the seventh seed in 19.22, ahead of Virginia’s Jack Aikins and Matthew King, who tied for the eighth seed in 19.23, which will require a swim-off.
