2020 Big East Swimming and Diving Championships Day 3: Xavier, Villanova Lead

The third day of the 2020 Big East Swimming and Diving Championships got underway today at the Nassau County Aquatics Center, bringing with it nail-biting finishes and fast swimming. The events contested included the 400 IM, 100 fly, 200 free, 100 back, 100 breast, 400 medley relay and men’s 3M diving event.

On the men’s side, Xavier University has now established a clear lead over Seton Hall and Georgetown. On the women’s side, Villanova continues to lead.

Women’s 400 IM

Kelly Montesi of Villanova won her second title of the meet with a time of 4:18.19. She made a clean sweep of the IMs, having won the 200 IM yesterday. Her teammate Kaitlin Gravell finished in second place with a time of 4:21.39. Phoebe Slaughter of Georgetown finished third in a time of 4:23.83, while her teammate Alexandra Robertson finished fourth at 4:24.30. In fifth place was Elizabeth Sargent of Seton Hall with a time of 4:25.70, meanwhile Taylor Hogan of Xavier finished sixth at 4:26.85. Corey Moon of Georgetown (4:26.90) and Emily Provenzo of Villanova (4:27.57) rounded out the championship final.

Men’s 400 IM

Justin Cucchi of Villanova took home top honours with a time of 3:50.91. Finishing second was Brett Sherman of Georgetown with a time of 3:52.01, meanwhile Justin Viotto of Providence finished third at 3:55.77. Jonathan Bernard of Xavier took fourth place at 3:55.86, Will Serad of Xavier took fifth place at 3:56.87, and Carlson Temple of Georgetown finished sixth at 3:57.11. Seton Hall’s Caleb Smith (3:59.09) finished in seventh position and Villanova’s Francis Prikasky (3:59.95) rounded out the top eight.

Women’s 100 Fly

Micaela Grassi of Villanova clinched the victory in a time of 54.87. Close behind her was Sierra Cripps of Seton Hall with a time of 55.06 for second place. Hannah Pugh finished in a time of 55.31 for third, meanwhile Taylor Hogan of Xavier touched at 55.72 for fourth place. Lauren Henasey of Georgetown finished in fifth (55.80), Villanova’s Tarryn Els (56.14) came sixth, Liliana Dimmig of Providence came seventh (56.75) and Gabriella Meringolo finished eighth (56.85).

Men’s 100 Fly

Liam Cosgrove took home the victory for Seton Hall in a time of 47.80. He was followed to the wall by Xavier teammates Charles Clark (48.47), Brandon Abboud (48.67) and Alexander Sironen (48.77). Nicholas Fiddler of Villanova finished in fifth place with a time of 48.85, while Michael Baldini of Georgetown finished sixth at 48.92. Stephen Krecsmar of Villanova took seventh in a time of 48.95, while Roark Lundal of Xavier (49.50) rounded out the top eight swimmers.

Women’s 200 Free

Millicent Routledge of Villanova clinched her second victory of the meet, taking the title in a time of 1:47.05. She had won the 50 free earlier in the meet. Finishing second through fourth were Xavier teammates Emily Conners (1:49.98), Abigail Garner (1:50.40), and Emily Saugstad (1:50.49). Julie Stankiewicz of Seton Hall took fifth place with a time of 1:50.72, meanwhile Belinda Donohoe finished sixth at 1:50.75. Gracie Wielar of Villanova (1:51.35) and Lauren Rutledge of Georgetown (1:51.58) finished seventh and eighth respectively.

Men’s 200 Free

Ben Laclair of Seton Hall took top honours with a time of 1:37.45. He was followed to the wall by Xavier teammates Andrew Martin (1:38.04), Benjamin Quon (1:38.86) and Jared Ritz (1:39.67). Finishing fifth was Joseph Gibson of Seton Hall with a time of 1:39.72. Sean Devlin of Georgetown and Reid Hutcherson of Villanova came sixth (1:40.56), while Jake McIntyre of Villanova (1:40.66) rounded out the final.

Women’s 100 Breast

Villanova swept the podium, taking 1-2-3 spots. Margaret Kleinsmith took top honours with a time of 1:03.11. In second place was Rayann Jaryszak at 1:03.37, while Perri Stahl finished third at 1:04.39. Lydia Schaeffer of Xavier finished fourth with a time of 1:04.70, while Jordan Decker of Seton Hall finished fifth at 1:04.86. Samantha Kim of Georgetown finished in sixth (1:05.07), Alexa Vota of Butler came seventh (1:05.92) and Natalie Rohweder of Butler came eighth (1:06.11).

Men’s 100 Breast

Josh Tosoni took home the win for Seton Hall in a time of 53.96. Georgetown teammates Connor Morikawa (54.51) and Nathaniel Goldfarb (55.60) finished second and third respectively. Roark Lundal of Xavier came in fourth (55.75), Carlson Temple of Georgetown finished fifth (55.97) and Gennarino Conzemius of Seton Hall finished sixth (56.22). Davis Klein of Xavier and Matthew Szilagyi of Georgetown tied for seventh place (56.56).

Women’s 100 Back

Enlin Chen took home the victory for Georgetown in a time of 55.85. She was followed to the wall by Brooke Atkins of Xavier with a time of 55.92, and Sally Alrutz of Providence (56.01). Gracie Wielar of Villanova took fourth place (56.16), Ali Fort of Xavier finished fifth (56.27) and Alexandra Rieker of Georgetown (56.36) finished sixth. Maureen Cummins of Xavier finished in seventh place (56.71), while Grace Huber of Xavier (57.49) rounded out the top eight swimmers.

Men’s 100 Back

Andrew Carbone of Georgetown finished in first place with a time of 47.18. He was followed to the wall by Andrew Kelly of Villanova (48.59) and Alexander Sironen of Xavier (48.77). Ross Pantano of Seton Hall finished in fourth place with a time of 49.03, while Liam Cosgrove also of Seton Hall came fifth at 49.55. Xavier’s Christian Thomas (49.63) and Charles Clark (50.15) finished sixth and seventh respectively, meanwhile Ben Puglessi of Seton Hall came eighth (50.50).

Women’s 3M Diving

Riley Fujioka of Georgetown took top honours with a score of 574.65. In second place was Bridie Dunn of Villanova with a score of 527.20, meanwhile Elizabeth Miller of Georgetown scored 519.25 for third place. Naomi Peng of Georgetown came fourth (499.10) and Margaret Barnhorst of Georgetown came fifth (475.00).

Women’s 400 Medley Relay

The team from Villanova (Kelly Montesi, Rayann Jaryszak, Micaela Grassi, Perri Stahl) took home the title in a time of 3:43.29. Xavier finished second in a time of 3:46.28, while Georgetown came third at 3:47.91. Meanwhile, Seton Hall, Providence and Butler came fourth, fifth and sixth respectively.

Men’s 400 Medley Relay

The team from Georgetown (Andrew Carbone, Connor Morikawa, Michael Baldini, Sean Devlin) finished in first place with a time of 3:13.71. In second place was the team from Seton Hall at 3:14.85, meanwhile the team from Xavier finished third at 3:17.40. Villanova finished fourth and Providence finished fifth.
