Katie Ledecky went out fast. At one point she was four seconds under American Record pace. Could she hold on? The fans at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion held their collective breath as she went lap by lap.

The magical 15 minute barrier has seemed untouchable by a woman, but with Katie, anything is possible.

As the race went on, she fell off pace, but ended up winning the final in a 15:07.57, a little off her American Record of 15:03.31 that she set earlier this season.

Ledecky was well ahead of second place Ally McHugh of Penn State who swam a 15:36.27, good for eighth all-time.

NC State senior Hannah Moore finished third at 15:40.68 as she is just outside the top 15 all-time performers in the event. Flavia Rigamonti sits 15th all-time with a 15:40.41 from 2003.

Stanford’s Megan Byrnes (15:43.68), Stanford’s Leah Stevens (15:49.07), Michigan’s G Ryan (15:50.95), Ohio State’s Molly Kowal (15:52.80) and NC State’s Tamila Holub (15:54.44) also placed in the top eight.

Ledecky successfully defends her title she won last year in this event. This is Stanford’s seventh NCAA title in the 1650 as they now have the most titles of any school. Ledecky joins Marybeth Linzemeier (1982-1984) and Janet Evans (1990, 1991) as winners for the Cardinal

200 Back

It hasn’t been the best week for Cal junior Kathleen Baker. Last year she won three individual NCAA titles. This year, she had yet to win an individual title. What is the best way to exorcise those demons and end the frustration?

An American Record.

Baker and many others had knocked on the door of that 200 back record for many years. Elizabeth Pelton originally set the record at the 2013 NCAA’s at 1:47.84.

Baker finally broke through and swam a 1:47.30 in the event, moving from third to first all-time.

Baker swam away from Kentucky’s Asia Seidt (1:49.24) and Wisconsin’s Beata Nelson (1:49.27) who finished second and third.

Seidt and Nelson moved up to sixth and seventh all-time in the event.

Texas A&M’s Lisa Bratton (1:50.74), Michigan’s Clara Smiddy (1:50.80), Kentucky’s Ali Galyer (1:51.15), Georgia’s Kylie Stewart (1:51.75) and Stanford’s Janet Hu (1:52.76) also swam in the championship final.

Cal now has eight total titles in the 200 back, breaking the tie with Texas. Baker joins Natalie Coughlin (2001-2003), Helen Silver (2006), Elizabeth Pelton (2013), Missy Franklin (2015) and herself (2017) as winners in the event for the Golden Bears.

100 Free

Stanford senior Simone Manuel swam the second fastest 100 free ever on Saturday night at the 2018 NCAA Division I Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships. Manuel swam a 45.65 to get just off her 45.56 American Record she set last year at NCAA’s.

Manuel is still the only swimmer to break 46 seconds in the event as Mallory Comerford of Louisville was second in the final at 46.20 and Cal junior Abbey Weitzeil was third at 46.74.

Comerford is now second all-time in the event as she moves ahead of Weitzeil in the all-time rankings. Siobhan Haughey of Michigan was fourth in the race and is now tenth all-time with a 46.91. Texas A&M senior Beryl Gastaldello became the eleventh swimmer to break 47 seconds in the event as she was fifth at 46.98.

Tennessee’s Erika Brown (47.08), Auburn’s Aly Tetzloff (47.58) and Cal’s Amy Bilquist (47.82) also competed in the championship final.

Stanford now has ten titles in the 100 free. Manuel joins Jenna Johnson (1986, 1987), Jenny Thompson (1992-1995), Claudia Franco (1996) and herself (2015, 2017) as winners in the event.

Manuel also is the third swimmer to win the event three times, joining Texas’ Leigh Ann Fetter (1989-1991) and SMU’s Martina Moravcova (1997-1999) as three-time winners. Georgia’s Kara Lynn Joyce (2004-2007) and Thompson also won the event four times.

200 Breast

Last night, she said she was sick of seeing a 2:03.

Tonight, she didn’t see a 2:03. Indiana junior Lilly King roared through the 200 breast final with a 2:02.60. She was the first to break 2:04, and now she is the first to break 2:03.

Texas A&M senior and fellow Indiana native Bethany Galat almost joined her in the 2:02 club as she was second at 2:03.26. She also moves to second all-time in the event.

Texas A&M’s four finalists fared well with Galat getting second, Sydney Pickrem (2:05.79) getting third, Anna Belousova (2:07.26) getting sixth and Esther Gonzalez Medina (2:08.20) getting eighth.

Michigan’s Miranda Tucker (2:06.73), Kentucky’s Bailey Bonnett (2:07.22) and Minnesota’s Lindsey Kozelsky (2:07.69) also swam in the championship final.

King has now won three NCAA titles in the 200 breast as she joins Kristine Quance (1994, 1996, 1997) of USC, Kristy Kowal (1998-2000) of Georgia, Tara Kirk (2002-2004) of Stanford, and Rebecca Soni (2006-2009) of USC as winners of three.

200 Fly

Stanford junior Ella Eastin has had herself quite an NCAA Championships. Eastin broke two American Records in the IM races, and added a third individual title with a win in the 200 fly on Saturday night at Ohio State.

Eastin swam a 1:50.01 which was a little off her 1:49.51 NCAA record from Pac-12’s last month. Eastin went 1-2 with Stanford teammate Katie Drabot, who has quietly had a phenomenal meet. Drabot was second in the final at 1:51.73, as she stays eighth all-time in the event.

Early leader Louise Hansson of USC was out blazing the first 100 but faded to third with a 1:52.25.

Cal’s Katie McLaughlin (1:52.64), Georgia’s Megan Kinglsey (1:52.66), USC’s Maddie Wright (1:53.40), Louisville’s Grace Oglesby (1:53.46) and Michigan’s Vanessa Krause (1:54.08) also competed in the championship final.

This is Stanford’s 12th overall 200 fly NCAA title as Eastin joins Janel Jorgensen (1990, 1993), Summer Sanders (1991, 1992), Misty Hyman (1998, 2001), Shelly Ripple (2002) and Elaine Breeden (2007, 2009, 2010) as winners for the Cardinal. This is Eastin’s second straight win in the event.

Platform Diving

Northwestern junior Olivia Rosendahl won the platform diving title for the second year in a row with 346.15 points. Rosendahl’s win last year was the first ever for Northwestern Women’s Swimming and Diving, and she successfully defended her title in 2018 ahead of Texas’ Samantha Bromberg (335.30).

The impressive part? Northwestern doesn’t have a tower at their home pool.

That is like a swimmer winning an Olympic gold medal without having a 50m pool to train in.

UCLA’s Eloise Belanger (300.65), Purdue’s Lexi Vincent (297.90), Ohio State’s Lara Tarvit (296.80), Hawaii’s Madison Sthamann (292.60), Indiana’s Jessica Parratto (291.35) and Nebraska’s Abigail Knapton (286.15) also competed in the top eight championship final.

400 Free Relay

The Stanford Cardinal had history on the line as they had a chance to become only the third team to win all five relays at an NCAA Championships, as well as become the third school to win 13 total titles in a single NCAA Division I Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships.

Stanford joins 2005 Georgia and 2008 Arizona as winners of all five relays, and joins Florida (1982-1988) and Stanford (1993) to win 13 total titles in a single meet.

The Stanford Cardinal capped off the historic meet with a 3:07.94 and a 45.47 anchor from Simone Manuel. They were a little off the record they set last year at 3:07.61. Janet Hu (47.49), Ella Eastin (47.13), Katie Drabot (47.85) and Manuel (45.47) swam for the Cardinal.

It wasn’t easy though as Cal gave them everything they could handle as they were second at 3:08.05.

Amy Bilquist (47.59), Abbey Weitzeil (46.37), Kathleen Baker (47.21) and Katie McLaughlin (46.88) swam for the Golden Bears.

There was a big race for third in the relay that eventually went to Virginia at 3:10.50. They out-touched Louisville (3:10.53) and Michigan (3:10.73) in the end.

Tennessee (3:11.89), Texas (3:12.50) and Texas A&M (3:13.10) also swam in the championship final.

The fastest splits in the field came from Manuel, Weitzeil, McLaughlin and Mallory Comerford (46.67).

Stanford now has thirteen total 400 free relay titles. The Cardinal previously won the relay in 1982, 1987, 1992, 1994-1997, 2010, 2012, 2014, 2015 and 2017.
