2018 FINA World Cup Beijing: Routine Morning for World Cup Stars on Day Two

The second day of preliminaries at the FINA World Cup Beijing stop featured nine preliminary events and two timed finals.

To no surprise, Emily Seebohm, Vlad Morozov, Sarah Sjostrom, Ranomi Kromowidjojo and Alia Atkinson all earned top seeds on day two. The session set up many sprint showdowns for day two finals.

Women’s 400 IM

Three swimmers raced in the early heat of the women’s 400 IM. Yi Zhou (4:52.26) holds the top time with eight swimmers remaining in the final. She was joined by Dan Zhao (5:03.73) and Meihui Sun (5:07.91) in the timed final.

Men’s 1500 Freestyle

In similar fashion, eight men raced in heat one of two of the 1500. Huafeng Wang leads the way headed into the final featuring Mykhailo Romanchuk, Ji Xinjie, Marwan El Kamash and more. His time of 15:29.68 was enough for the win over Yu Zhou in 15:35.51. The two were far ahead of the next closest competitor, Yinbo Zhang who raced to a 16:07.79.

Men’s 50 Backstroke

China’s Xu Jiayu took the first true top seed of the morning in 23.46. He was followed closely by Michael Andrew (23.69), who currently holds the second-fastest time in the world this year and Russia’s Vladimir Morozov (23.86) who is fresh off two victories in Beijing.

Australia’s Mitch Larkin led a group of swimmers at 24 seconds, coming in at 24.10. He was followed by Mikita Tsmyh (24.24), William Yang (24.34), Wang Peng (24.35) and Kecheng Wang (24.49).

Women’s 200 Freestyle

A stacked 200 Freestyle prelim resulted in Sarah Sjostrom cruising in at 1:54.87 for the the top seed. China’s Li Bingjie was next in 1:55.39 and Femke Heemskerk took third in 1:55.80 after blasting a quick 54.97 opening 100.

Yang Junxuan (1:55.96) and Caiping Yang (1:56.17) were fourth and fifth, respectively. They were followed by Yuxi Chen (1:56.31), Zhang Yuhan (1:56.50) and Yuhan Qiu (1:56.52).

Men’s 200 IM

Larkin, a heavy favorite in this event, was disqualified in the preliminary heats with a time that would have easily made the top eight. Japan’s Keita Sunama got to the wall first in 1:56.49 narrowly ahead of Feilian Mao (1:56.85). Yu Cong also won a tight battle over Wang Shun 1:57.22 to 1:57.27.

Japan’s Hiromasa Fujimori earned a second swim in 1:57.53. Australia, despite the absence of Larkin, also placed two swimmers in the final. Jared Gilliland (1:57.67) and Matthew Wilson (1:58.15) will race in the outside lanes tonight. Hungary’s David Verraszto  qualified in the sixth position with a 1:57.56.

Women’s 100 Backstroke

Emily Seebohm led another loaded women’s event in the 100 Backstroke. Her time of 57.63 led a quartet of swimmers under 58 seconds. Minna Atherton (57.73), Katinka Hosszu (57.78) and Kira Toussaint (57.99) were all under the mark. All four of these women currently rank in the top five worldwide this year, with Seebohm leading the way in 55.81 from Budapest.

China then placed four swimmers in the final in Fu Yuanhui (58.27), Chen Jie (58.97), Liu Yaxin (59.39) and Peng Xuwei (59.45).

Men’s 50 Breaststroke

A tight 50 Breaststroke prelim has set up a true battle as the top five finishers were separated by less than half a second. After a quick start, Peter Stevens hit the wall first in 26.26. Close behind were Andrew in 26.30 and Yan Zibei in 26.45. Ilya Shymanovich (26.51), Kirill Prigoda (26.71) and Weijia Shi (26.80) were also in the mix. Hao Shen (27.13) took seventh while Arno Kamminga and Anton Chupkov tied for eighth in 27.21.

Women’s 50 Butterfly

The close rankings did not end there, as just one one hundredth of a second separated Ranomi Kromowidjojo and Sjostrom in the 50 Butterfly prelims. Their times of 25.60 and 25.61 are about one second off their season bests of 24.65 and 24.61.

China’s Zhang Yufei was third in 25.78, while Yuhan Qiu and Wang Yichun went 25.96 and 25.98. Pernille Blume will be another swimmer to watch in the final after taking the sixth seed in 26.22. Lin Xintong (26.23) and Alia Atkinson (26.50) will round out the heat.

Men’s 100 Freestyle

Morozov took his first top seed of the meet in the 100 Freestyle with a time of 46.79. America’s Blake Pieroni was next in 47.28. The two are currently ranked first and second in the world rankings with their times from Budapest.

China placed three swimmers in the final with swims from He Junyi (48.02), Cao Jiwen (48.20) and Hou Yujie (48.34). Bradley Vincent (48.32), Daniel Hunter (48.33) and Artsiom Machekin (48.36) will also race in the final.

Women’s 100 Breaststroke

The top three swimmers in the world this year claimed the top three seeds for the 100 Breaststroke final. Atkinson (1:05.70), Vitalina Simonova (1:06.34) and Yulia Efimova (1:06.59) will provide an exciting race for gold in this event.

They will be challenged by Junyang Feng (1:07.06), Yun He (1:08.04), Franziska Weidener (1:08.18), Pei Wun Lin (1:08.41) and Hosszu (1:08.72).

Men’s 200 Butterfly

Similar to previous events on morning two, the 200 Butterfly was a tight race for the top eight. China’s Li Zhuhao (1:56.34) and Zheng Xiaojing (1:56.40) took first and second. Japan’s Masayuki Umemoto was next in 1:56.84 followed closely by Hungary’s Verraszto in 1:56.94.

Shuchang Zhou (1:57.08), Rui Yu (1:57.45), Yauhen Tsurkin (1:57.85) and Rune Zhou (1:59.89) placed fifth through eighth.
