2017 NCAA D1 Women’s Swimming Championships: Records Continue Tumbling in Night Two

Records continued to tumble down during finals of the second day at the 2017 NCAA D1 Women’s Swimming Championships.

200 Free Relay

The NCAA record that was set this morning by Stanford was expected to be short lived going into the finals session. Stanford reset their American record from this morning, but they did not touch first. California won its third straight 200 free relay title with a 1:25.59 for a new NCAA record. It will not stand as the American Record because of anchor Farida Osman, who is Egyptian.

Abbey Weitzeil, Maddie Murphy, Amy Bilquist and Osman comprised of the new record setting relay. They out-touched Stanford, who will keep their American Record title with a 1:25.91. Osman anchored the relay in a 20.91, the fastest in the field.

Simone Manuel, Lia Neal, Janet Hu and Ally Howe swam for the Cardinal. Georgia was third at 1:26.49 with Olivia Smoliga, Veronica Burchill, Emily Cameron and Chantal Van Landeghem. Smoliga had the fastest leadoff split at 21.32, faster than anyone from this morning.

NC State (1:27.25), Arizona (1:27.39), Louisville (1:27.52), Auburn (1:27.73) and Wisconsin (1:28.01) rounded out the podium.

500 Free

Katie Ledecky reset her NCAA, American and US Open Record from the Pac-12 Championships a few short weeks ago. Ledecky broke all the records at 4:24.06, a second under the old record at 4:25.15. An equally impressive swim, Leah Smith broke 4:30 for the first time with a 4:28.90, moving her up to the 11th fastest performance of all time.

Ledecky and Smith were way ahead from the rest of the field the entire way, the only question was how far they could both go under their best times. Smith had been knocking on the 4:30 barrier for two years now and she finally did it tonight while trailing one of the best swimmers in history. This is Stanford’s first title in the 500 free since 2001 when Jessica Foschi won it at 4:37.81. It is the eighth title in the 500 for Stanford as Marybeth Linzmeier won three titles from 1982-1984 and Janet Evans won two in 1990 and 1991.

The battle for third was very exciting as outside smoke, Kennedy Goss of Indiana had a monster last 50 with a 4:36.13 to out-touch Louisville’s Mallory Comerford at 4:36.16. Hannah Moore (4:36.85), Rose Bi (4:37.30), Danielle Valley (4:38.31) and G Ryan (4:40.28) rounded out the A-final.

200 IM

In a star studded 200 IM field, there was going to be zero room for error if you were going to win the race. Kathleen Baker led the race from start to finish and just missed the records in the 200 IM with a 1:51.69 win for the Cal Golden Bears.

Last year’s runner up, Baker, won Cal’s fourth NCAA title in that event after Caitlin Leverenz won in 2012 and 2013 as well as Missy Franklin in 2015. That time will put Baker as the second fastest performer in history in the event. This is also Baker’s first NCAA title, as she was an Olympian and silver medalist last summer in the 100 backstroke. Baker held off hard charging Ella Eastin of Stanford at 1:52.27, who will keep her NCAA and American Record from last year. Texas senior Madisyn Cox finished third at 1:52.58.

Sydney Pickrem (1:53.30), Bethany Galat (1:54.16), Alexia Zevnik (1:54.74), Louise Hansson (1:54.79) and Asia Seidt (1:55.19) rounded out the top 8.

50 Free

The 50 free final was probably the most decorated A-final of the meet so far with five Olympians from Rio competing. Ultimately, it was the silver medalist in this event that out-touched the whole field. Stanford sophomore Simone Manuel won the race for her second NCAA title in the event with a 21.17 for the win, under the NCAA record set by Olivia Smoliga last year at 21.21.

Smoliga, who won the event last year, was second at 21.27 and Ohio State’s Liz Li was third at 21.29. Li had led at the turn but Manuel did what she always seems to do, coming out of nowhere to get her hand on the wall first. Manuel is now the second fastest performer all time in the event and it is Stanford’s 10th title in the event. Manuel last won it in 2015. The last Stanford winners were Catherine Fox (1997, 1998, 1999), Jenny Thompson (1992, 1993), Jenna Johnson (1986, 1987) and Krissie Bush (1984).

Farida Osman (21.38), Abbey Weitzeil (21.58), Maddie Murphy (21.76), Caroline Baldwin (21.82) and Chantal Van Landeghem (21.85) also swam in the A-final.

1-Meter Diving

Texas’ Alison Gibson won the 1m diving title for the first time in her career and won Texas’ first diving title since Nicole Pohorenec won the platform event in 2004. It is also the first 1m title for Texas since 1998 when Vera Ilyina won back to back titles in 97 and 98.

The Texas freshman won the competition ahead of last year’s diver of the year in Sharae Zhang of Nevada and Olympian Kassidy Cook of Stanford. Gibson scored 332.60 to win.

Minnesota’s Sarah Bacon (326.50), Cal’s Maria Polyakov (325.80), Minnesota’s Yu Zhou (317.95), LSU’s Elizabeth Cui (315.35), Nevada’s Zhang (315.00), Miami’s Pei Lin (312.00) and Stanford’s Cook (305.65) rounded out the A-Final.

400 Medley Relay

In a huge turn of events, Stanford will stand on top of the podium of the 400 medley relay after a disqualification to the first place team Cal. This is the fourth straight year that Stanford has won the 400 medley relay NCAA title. Cal originally touched first at 3:26.18 after leading the whole way, thanks to a stellar lead off from Kathleen Baker at 49.80 to become the second fastest performer in history in the 100 back.

Stanford had Ally Howe (51.42), Kim Williams (58.51), Janet Hu (50.27) and Lia Neal (46.15) swimming on the relay that won at 3:26.35. Texas A&M moved up to third with Lisa Bratton (51.60), Jorie Caneta (58.60), Sarah Gibson (50.28) and Beryl Gastaldello (47.12) at 3:27.60. Third went to Texas at 3:27.74 with Tasija Karosas (50.83), Madisyn Cox (58.30), Lauren Case (51.72) and Rebecca Millard (46.89).

Lilly King uncorked a huge 56.17 breaststroke split for Indiana, putting them in the lead at the halfway point while Gia Dalesandro held on to the lead at the 300 with a 50.99 split. Indiana fell to fifth at the end of the race. The fastest butterfly split in the field was Louise Hansson of USC at 49.78 and the fastest anchor split was Louisville’s Mallory Comerford at 46.13. The fastest freestyle split was originally Abbey Weitzeil of Cal at 45.96, but she jumped early on Noemie Thomas’ fly leg after her 50.69 split.

This is Stanford’s fourth straight title in the relay and their 13th overall. Louisville, Indiana, Georgia and USC also swam in the A-final.
