The men arrived at IUPUI ready to race for day two prelims. Florida’s Caeleb Dressel and Texas’ Will Licon set themselves up for a run at defending their national titles with the top seeds in the 50 free and 200 IM respectively.

Texas claimed the top seed in the 200 free relay, while Missouri topped the 400 medley relay.

200 Free Relay

Texas arrived ready to race on day two, picking up the top seed in prelims of the 200 free relay with a pool record of 1:15.35. Teammates Tate Jackson (19.22), Brett Ringgold (18.75), John Shebat (18.93), and Jack Conger (18.45) teamed up to set Texas up for a run at the gold tonight.

Florida’s Enzao Martinez Scarpe (19.57), Caeleb Dressel (17.99), Jan Switkowski (18.92), and Jack Blyzinskyj (19.04) grabbed a close second place seed with a 1:15.52.

NC State’s Wolfpack picked up the third place seed with a 1:15.56, followed by Cal’s 1:16.11 and Auburn’s 1:16.45.

Indiana (1:16.53), Missouri (1:16.78), and Alabama (1:16.91) complete the top eight qualifiers.

The 500 free final is squaring up to be an exciting race after three athletes posted qualifying times within .38 seconds of each other.

The South Carolina duo of Fynn Minuth and Akaram Mahmoud led the qualifying field with top times of 4:09.55 and 4:09.73, while Michigan freshman Felix Auboeck turned in a close 4:09.93 for the third place seed.

2015 champion Clark Smith of Texas added a 4:10.53 to qualify fourth overall, just ahead of teammate Townley Haas’ 4:11.33.

Indiana’s Marwan El Kamash (4:11.84), Stanford’s Grant Shoults (4:12.14), and NC State’s Anton Ipsen (4:12.18) qualified sixth through eighth respectively.

Will Licon of Texas led five swimmers beneath the previous pool record of 1:41.21, set by Stanford’s David Nolan, to grab the top seed going into finals. The defending champion turned in a 1:40.50, not far off his 2016 winning time of 1:40.04.

NC State’s Andreas Vazaios delivered a second place qualifying time of 1:40.77, followed by Florida’s Mark Szarenek’s 1:41.11.

The Georgia duo of Gunnar Bentz and Chase Kalisz turned in times of 1:41.12 and 1:41.20 for the fourth and fifth place seeds respectively.

Cal’s Andrew Seliskar (1:41.49) and Ryan Murphy (1:41.79) picked up sixth and seventh, while Texas’ Jonathan Roberts posted a 1:42.24 to round out the top eight.

To little no surprise it was Florida’s Caeleb Dressel who dashed to the top seed in the 50 free prelims. The reigning national champion delivered a qualifying time of 18.38 to qualify .39 seconds ahead of the competition and put him within range of his American, NCAA, U.S. Open, and Meet records of 18.20.

Picking up the second place seed was Texas’ Joseph Schooling, separating himself from the competition with a time of 18.77.

Auburn’s Zachary Apple and NC State’s Ryan Held delivered matching 18.93’s for the third place seed, followed by Cal’s Pawel Sendyk’s 18.96.

Michael Chadwick of Missouri picked up a close sixth place seed with a time of 18.99, while USC’s Dylan Carter posted a 19.04 for seventh.

Michigan’s Paul Powers completed the top eight with a time of 19.06.

Missouri grabbed the top seed of the morning with a dynamic 3:02.53, thanks to fast relay splits from Fabian Schwingenschloegl and Michael Chadwick. Schwingenschloegl posted a 50.66 on the breast leg to be the fastest split of the morning, while Chadwick’s 40.93 free split was second only to Caeleb Dressel’s 40.56. Schwingenschloegl and Chadwick paired up with Daniel Hein (back, 46.36) and Andrew Sansoucie (free, 40.93) posted a combined 3:02.53.

Texas’ John Shebat (44.82), Will Licon (51.38), Joseph Schooling (45.41), and Brett Ringgold (41.84) posted a second place qualifying time of 3:03.45, while Indiana’s foursome of Bob Glover (45.86), Ian Finnerty (52.02), Vini Lanza (44.85), and Blake Pieroni (41.11) turned in a 3:03.84 for third.

Louisville picked up the fourth place seed with a 3:04.05, followed by Florida’s 3:04.20.

USC (3:04.55), Stanford (3:04.90), and Cal (3:04.95) complete the top eight.

Harvard and Alabama suffered disqualifications for an early take-off from Dean Farris (Harvard, free) and a stroke infraction from Luke Kaliszak (Alabama, breast).
