2015 Iowa Girls State Championships Highlighted With Sophie Sorenson State Record

Ames took the 2015 Iowa state girls’ title on Saturday, celebrating their fourth title in five years after finishing second at last years state championships. The meet was highlighted by a state record in the 100 backstroke by Ames sophomore Sophie Sorenson, as well as sweep of all three relays. Ames will return all scorers next year, as they did not have a single senior on their roster. Muscatine’s Sarah Schemmel was named outstanding swimmer of the meet after winning the 50 (23.24) and 100 (50.51) freestyles.

Meet Recap

The Ames 200 Medley Relay of Jazlyn Horras, Molly Winer, Grace Synder, and Amy Feddersen started the meet of with a bang, winning in 1:45.65 and only .15 off of the state record of 1:45.50. Ames went on to sweep all three relays, winning the 200 freestyle in 1:35.57 (Sophie Sorreson, Sarah Bell, Olivia Jenks, and Amy Feddersen) before setting a state record in the 400 freestyle relay to close the meet. The team of Grace Synder, Olivia Jenks, Morgan Rosser, and Sophie Sorenson touched in a time of 3:29.15 to break the record of 3:29.27 set by Lewis Central in 2013.

Senior Allyssa Fluit of Southeast Polk won the 200 freestyle for the third year in a row, touching in 1:47.53, just off of her state record of 1:47.14 from last year. Fluit also won the 500 freestyle in 4:54.78, also off her own state mark of 4:50.27 from 2014.  

Other multiple event winners included Johnston junior Lexi Horner and Muscatine junior Sarah Schemmel. Horner won both the 200 IM (2:05.04) and the 100 breaststroke (1:05.04). Schemmel was named outstanding swimmer of the meet after winning the 50 (23.24) and 100 (50.51) freestyles. Schemmel’s 100 freestyle time was only a tenth off of the existing state record of 50.40 set by MyKenzie Leehy in 2014.

Newton senior Samantha Hendricks won the 100 butterfly in 55.01 before Ames sophomore Sophie Sorenson broke the first individual state record of the meet with a 54.61 in the 100 backstroke. Sorenson’s time topped the old state record of 54.83 that was set last year by Waukee’s Maddie Gehrke.

Most of us who love the sport in Iowa WISH the IGHSAU & IHSAA would hold the championships meets in a venue like that………with a prelims/ finals format…….with better rules about coaching………

This venue is great for the NCAA meet, but you know there just isn’t enough seats for the IGHSAU and IHSAA associations to justify hosting the meet in this type of pool……hard to believe isn’t it?
