ZUMO Performance of the Week: 12-Year-Old Sara Vargas Strikes Gold at Para Pan Am Games

12-year-old Sara Vargas of Colombia was the youngest competitor at the 2019 Para Pan American Games in Lima, winning five gold medals and a silver. Competing in the S6 category, Vargas broke Pan American Games records in every single event she won gold, winning the 50 fly (40.48), 100 back (1:33.03), 50 free (35.73) and 100 free (1:17.00). She took silver in the 400 free behind Mexico’s Vianney Trejo with a 5:39.71 while Trejo was a 5:38.30 to break the Games record by 23 seconds.

Vargas’ best performance came in the 50 free, where she won gold over Brazil’s Laila Suzigan and got within three seconds of the world record of 32.78 held by Yelyzaveta Mereshko of the Ukraine. She won by a second and a half over Suzigan.
