NEW COMMIT: The University of Tennessee has scored a new verbal commitment for the 2022-23 season and beyond from sprinter Guilherme Caribe of Brazil.

He will join Joaquin VargasMartin EspernbergerGarret Green and Nick Simons in Knoxville as a member of the Vols’ Class of 2026.

Regarding his commitment, he said:

“I am so excited to announce my verbal commitment to continue my academic and swimming career at University to Tennessee! My goal is to study at a university that can offer me a good balance between academics and a good training structure, and I feel as though Tennessee is the best fit for me. I was amazed with the facilities, structure and all the attention that I got from the coaches. I aim to contribute as much as I can to the program. I wanted to thank my family, friends and ASM Scholarships for all the help and support to make my dream come true. GO VOLS”

Caribe trains with Clube Dos Empregados Da Petrobrás where he is a three-time Brazilian Junior National champion in the 50m and 100m free. In 2019, he broke the Brazilian National Age Group record in the 50m free for 16 year olds.

At the Brazilian Olympic Trials, he finished 13th in the 100m free and 14th in the 50m free. Caribe also won the 4x100m free relay at the South American Championships earlier this year.

In LCM, his best times include:

  • 50 free – 22.78
  • 100 free – 49.73
  • 100 fly – 55.60

In SCY, those times convert to:

  • 50 free – 19.80
  • 100 free – 43.36
  • 100 fly – 48.82

Caribe is about to begin his senior year at Salesiano Dom Bosco.

He will make a big impact both individually and on relays when he arrives in Knoxville next year. Caribe’s best times (converted to yards) are already fast enough to score in the B-final of the 100 free and C-final of the 50 free at the 2021 SEC Championships.
