Virginia Tech Opens 2022 Recruiting with Verbal from European Juniors Finalist Carmen Weiler

NEW COMMIT: The first verbal commitment for the 2022-23 season belongs to Virginia Tech: the Hokies have received a verbal pledge from Carmen Weiler, who was born in Spain and currently resides in Singapore.

She will arrive in Blacksburg as a member of the Class of 2026.

She told Swimming World:

I want to thank Coach Sergio for giving me this amazing opportunity to join his team. I can’t wait to be a part of the Hokie family”

A talented sprinter, Weiler trains with Nexus Swim Team and attends the Nexus International School. She won the 100m free, 100m IM, and 200m back at the Singapore National Championships in November and earned 100% best times at the FINA World Cup – Singapore. Last summer, she finished fourth in the 100m free at the LEN European Junior Championships and raced the 50m/100m free combo at the 7th FINA World Junior Championships.

In LCM, her best times include:

50 free – 25.79
100 free – 55.60
200 free – 2:05.64
50 back – 29.20
100 back – 1:02.90
200 back – 2:16.96

In SCY, those times convert to:

50 free – 22.48
100 free – 48.69
200 free – 1:50.35
50 back – 25.17
100 back – 55.02
200 back – 1:59.86

Even with over two years to go before suiting up for the Hokies as a member of the class of 2026, Weiler will add valuable depth to their sprint group. Her best time in the 100 free (converted to yards) would’ve been at the top of Virginia Tech’s lineup last year, and she would’ve scored in the A-final of the 100 free and the B-final of the 50 free at the 2020 ACC Championships.

Under head coach Sergio Lopez, Virginia Tech finished eighth in the team standings at the 2020 ACC Championships and are bringing in an extremely talented incoming first-year class. Lopez is originally from Spain – like Weiler – and earned the bronze medal in the 200m breast at the 1988 Olympics. He also served as the high-performance coach of the Singapore Swimming Association for two years.
