Virginia Tech Begins 2021 Recruiting with Verbals from Alexandra Eastmond & Athena Vanyo

NEW COMMITS: Lincolnshire, Ill. native Alexandra Eastmond and Athena Vanyo of Charlottesville, Va. have both announced their verbal commitments to Virginia Tech and will suit up for the Hokies in the fall of 2021.

ALEXANDRA EASTMOND

Primarily a backstroker, Eastmond swims year-round with Patriot Aquatic Club and finaled in two events at Illinois LCM Seniors this past summer before going on to earn a pair of best times at Des Moines Futures. Last short course season, she raced four events at NCSAs. A current junior at Adlai E Stevenson School, Eastmond placed 10th in the 100 back at the 2019 Illinois State Championships.

Regarding her commitment, she said:

“I’m so excited to announce my verbal commitment to continue my academic and athletic career at Virginia Tech. I would like to thank my friends, coaches, teammates, and my family for helping achieve this. Go Hokies!!”

Her best times include:

  • 100 back – 56.33
  • 200 back – 2:04.71
  • 200 IM – 2:07.47
  • 100 free – 51.85

ATHENA VANYO

Vanyo, who owns the Winter Juniors cut in the 100 fly, does her club swimming with Piedmont Family YMCA and most recently placed 15th in the 100 fly at Juniors East in December. The USA Swimming Scholastic All-American had a pair of top-16 finishes at YMCA LCM Nationals after she earned 100% best times at Virginia LCM Seniors last summer.  Also competing for Monticello High School, Vanyo won the 100 fly and took third in the 100 free as a sophomore while claiming bronze in the 50/100 free combo during her freshman season at the Virginia 3A State Championships.

She told Swimming World:

“I am thrilled to announce my verbal commitment to swim at Virginia Tech. Thank you to my mom and dad for driving me to practice every morning, my teammates for pushing me to excel, and my friends for always being there to cheer me on. #gohokies”

Her best times include:

  • 100 fly – 54.33
  • 200 IM – 2:05.61
  • 50 free – 23.72
  • 100 free – 51.77
