Virginia on a Roll for 2021, Adds Two More Verbals from Max Iida, Tyler Sicignano

NEW COMMIT: The University of Virginia has continued forming a stellar recruiting class and recently picked up a pair of verbals for the fall of 2021 from Max Iida and Tyler Sicignano. They will arrive in Charlottesville as members of the Hoos’ class of 2025 along with Jack Aikins, Colin Bitz and Matthew Styczen.

Both swimmers will add valuable depth when they suit up for the Cavaliers at the start of the 2021-22 season. Under head coach Todd DeSorbo, Virginia placed fourth in the team standings at the ACC Championships and finished 10th overall at NCAAs last season.

MAX IIDA

Hailing from Glenview, Ill., Iida competes for Glenbrook Swim Club and owns a trio of U.S. Open standards. He raced the 200m IM at Junior Nationals this past summer after winning both breaststroke events at Illinois LCM Seniors. Last shourt course season, he registered five top-8 finishes at Illinois SCY Seniors before going on to win both breaststroke events at Rochester Sectionals.

A current junior at Glenbrook South High School, Iida earned bronze in the 100 breast and 200 IM as a sophomore while placing 12th in the latter during his freshman season. His older brother, Sam Iida, is currently a junior breaststroker and IMer at Arizona.

His best times include:

TYLER SICIGNANO

Sicignano swims year-round with Chelsea Piers Aquatic Club and owns three U.S. Open standards. The Fairfield, Conn. native capped off his extremely successful summer season by earning four gold medals at the TYR Summer Senior Championships where he achieved six best times. Last winter, he won the 200 fly at the Tom Dolan Invite and swept both fly events at Ithaca Sectionals.

Sicignano has seen some pretty big time drops over the past two seasons, shaving off six seconds in the 100 fly/200 IM, nine seconds in the 200 fly, and 22 seconds in the 400 IM. He has also earned USA Swimming Scholastic All-American honors for his efforts twice in his career.

He told Swimming World:

Virginia Men finished 3rd at 2019 ACCs. Virginia Tech finished 4th. Thanks for correcting.
