USMS Spring Championships Day 1: Grant Shoults Breaks Record in 1000 Free

The U.S. Masters Swimming (USMS) Spring National Championships kicked off on Thursday in Irvine, California.

It is the first time since 1981 a USMS national meet will be held in the Southern California city.

The event is expected to be the largest in USMS history with nearly 2,500 swimmers entered.

The first day of the meet was just the distance events, and 400 free relay. Several records were set, including former Stanford swimmer Grant Shoults, swimming for Mission Viejo, who broke the men’s 25-29 age group record in the 1000 freestyle. He got to the wall in 9:03.99.

Six other USMS records fell during the first day of competition:

Joanne Menard, Mesa Aquatics Club-Masters: Women’s 75-79 1650 freestyle (25:09.83)
Grant Shoults, Mission Viejo Nadadores: Men’s 25-29 1000 freestyle (9:03.99)
New York Athletic Club: Mixed 18+ 400 freestyle relay (3:11.45)
The Olympic Club: Mixed 25+ 400 freestyle relay (3:16.11)
North Carolina Masters Swimming: Mixed 35+ 400 freestyle relay (3:23.51)
Puget Sound Masters: Mixed 75+ 400 freestyle relay (5:14.51)

Meet Coverage

Friday’s session will consist of the 100 breaststroke, 200 backstroke, 50 butterfly, 200 IM, 100 free and mixed 200 free relay. Saturday will feature the 500 free, 100 butterfly, 200 breaststroke, 100 IM, 50 backstroke, 200 medley relay and 200 freestyle relay. Sunday’s final session will include the 400 IM, 50 free, 200 butterfly, 100 backstroke, 200 free, 50 breast and mixed medley relay.
