USA Swimming will host a virtual award show on Thursday, Jan. 28 honoring top finishers at the 2020 18 & Under Winter Championships.

The Winter Championships were held as satellite meets in December, a decentralized plan to replace the usual Speedo Winter Junior Championships in a more COVID-19-safe way and offer kids, some of whom have lost entire club and scholastic seasons, a chance to compete.

The results were combined, as many virtual meets have, from each of the LSCs across the country, and awards were mailed to top-eight finishers in each event. But the awards piece was missing.

That is until Thursday’s announcement. A week on, at 8 p.m. ET, the winners will recognized in an online ceremony overseen by six-time Olympic gold medalist Brendan Hansen, USA Swimming’s Director of Team Services. Olympic medalists Ryan Murphy, Lilly King, Olivia Smoliga and Blake Pieroni will be among the presenters.

“The success of the 18 & Under Championship does not happen without the collaborative approach at the local level by our LSCs, clubs and coaches,” Joel Shinofield, Managing Director of Sport Development for USA Swimming, said in an organization release. “We know many athletes did not have a chance to compete in 2020 and helping them safely return to the water is our highest priority. This competition was a great example of the swimming community as a whole doing what it takes to create opportunity for young athletes. Congrats to everyone involved!”

Award lists will be posted on usaswimming.org following the virtual awards show.
