Torri Huske Cracks Two National High School Records; Just Misses a Third Mark

The only thing holding Torri Huske back from changing the national high school record book was weather, as the Virginia 6A Championships were delayed until Thursday night. Once Huske hit the water, though, the Tokyo Olympic hopeful was superb, as she set new scholastic records in the 200-yard individual medley and the 100-yard butterfly.

Representing Yorktown High, Huske first broke the national standard in the 200 medley when she covered the event in 1:53.73. That effort by Huske, who is committed to Stanford, broke the 2009 record of Dagny Knutson, whose former standard stood at 1:53.82. Not long after, Huske was on the blocks for her best event, the 100 butterfly, and popped a time of 49.95. That swim not only broke Huske’s own public-school record of 50.67, it broke the overall record of 50.35, set twice by Claire Curzan.

Huske was also sensational in relay action, as she led off Yorktown’s winning 200 freestyle relay in 21.65, which was just .01 off the public-school record of 21.64, held by Abbey Weitzeil.

When the United States Olympic Trials are held later this summer in Omaha, Huske will be one of the leading contenders to nail down a berth to the Tokyo Games in the 100-meter butterfly, where Curzan will also be a major factor.

In the boys’ meet, Texas recruit Anthony Grimm prevailed in the 50 freestyle in 19.69 and won the 100 breaststroke in 53.84.
