Tokyo Olympics: Day Two Prelims Heat Sheets Posted; Five Individual Events + Men’s 400 Free Relay

After Olympic swimming kicked off with five finals, day two prelims will begin Sunday evening in Japan at 7 p.m. local time (6 a.m. ET in the U.S.), and the heat sheet for that session is now available. Events on the program for day two include the women’s 100 backstroke, men’s 200 freestyle, women’s 100 breaststroke, men’s 100 backstroke, women’s 400 freestyle and men’s 400 freestyle relay.

The women’s 100 back will see new world-record holder Kaylee McKeown and former world-record holder Regan Smith each make their Olympic debuts in the pool, while a deep field of 1:44s led by Danas Rapsys and Duncan Scott will lead the way in the men’s 200 free. Lilly King returns to the pool for the first time since the then-19-year-old won two gold medals in Rio as she is the heavy favorite in the women’s 100 breast, while the four primary contenders for gold will swim in the men’s 100 back. Evgeny Rylov and defending Olympic champion Ryan Murphy will be swimming together in the final heat, while Kliment Kolesnikov and two-time world champion Xu Jiayu will each be in their own heats.

The first showdown of the Tokyo Olympics between Ariarne Titmus and Katie Ledecky will have to wait until the women’s 400 freestyle final Monday morning in Japan (Sunday evening in the U.S.), but each swimmer will look to put down strong qualifying times in the heats. Finally, Russia will be in heat one for the men’s 400 free relay with the United States in heat two to set up a likely showdown for gold between those two countries. Caeleb Dressel will likely not make his first appearance in Tokyo until Monday’s final as his teammates will be tasked with qualifying the U.S. squad for the final.
