The following 12 athletes, six men and six women, have been named Swimming World’s Masters Swimmers of the Year for 2021. Listed alphabetically, here is what they achieved to earn their accolades.

The Week That Was #2: Adam Peaty Wins 100 Breaststroke In 58.58 At British Championships & Sets Sights On Paris 2024

There was a combination of relief and encouragement for Adam Peaty as he won the 100m breaststroke at the British Championships in 58.58 in only his fourth two-length race since claiming the Olympic title in Tokyo.

The six-day meet at Ponds Forge, Sheffield, doubles as the trials for the World Championships in Budapest in June with the eight-time world champion preselected following his exploits in Japan where he became the first British swimmer to retain an Olympic title.

The Week That Was #3: Michael Brinegar Foregoing Final Year of Eligibility at Indiana; Will Train Full-Time With Mark Schubert

United States Olympian Michael Brinegar, a standout at Indiana University, announced on Wednesday night that he will forego his final collegiate season with the Hoosiers and turn professional. Brinegar competed at last summer’s Olympic Games in Tokyo in the 800-meter freestyle and 1500 freestyle, finishing 17th in both events. Brinegar plans to relocate back to California and train with Hall of Fame coach Mark Schubert, who guided the distance star to the international stage.

More than 150 of Australia’s top swimmers led by Tokyo Olympic champions Kaylee McKeown and Zac Stubblety-Cook have converged on the Gold Coast for a three-day Swimming Australia High Performance Invitational Meet at the Miami Aquatic Centre – with nail-biting finishes and a “prizemoney wheel” the order of the opening night’s finals.

The Week That Was #5: World Junior Relay Record Holder Tess Howley Announces 2023 Verbal to Virginia

World junior and national age group record holder Tess Howley of Rockaway Park, New York, has pledged her verbal commitment to the University of Virginia beginning in the fall of 2023.

She will join currently club teammate Cavan Gormsen as well as Maggie Schalow in Charlottesville as a member of the Hoos’ Class of 2027.
