Since the COVID-19 pandemic prevented Swimming World from naming Open Water Swimmers of the Year for 2020, the magazine, instead, takes a look at the top marathon athletes over the last 10 years.

Since 2005, Swimming World has recognized the top Open Water Swimmer of the Year for both male and female. In the first five years of the award, Russia’s Larisa Ilchenko won it three times, as did Germany’s Thomas Lurz.

In the last decade (2010-19), Sharon van Rouwendaal has won the award three times (2014-16-18) with an Olympic gold medal coming in the middle of that run in Rio in 2016. The Dutch swimmer has been one of the most successful open water swimmers in the world, as has France’s Aurelie Muller, who won the award in 2015 and 2017, winning the 10K World title each time and a silver in the 5K in 2017.

The Open Water World Championships began in 1991 with only two events: the 25K for men and women. At the third Worlds (1998), the 5K was added, and by the fourth meet (2000), races were held individually for 5K, 10K and 25K. However, at the Olympics, only the marathon 10K event, which debuted in 2008, is contested.

One of the top swimmers at the 25K distance is Brazil’s Ana Marcela Cunha, who has won the World title four times. But she has been named the female Open Water Swimmer of the Year only once—in 2019 when she won both the 5K and 25K at Worlds, becoming the first woman to win those events since 2001.

On the men’s side, Ferry Weertman (Netherlands) and Lurz each claimed two SOY awards in the last decade. Weertman won the award after his Olympic gold medal performance in 2016 that provided (with Rouwendaal) a Netherlands sweep. Weertman captured the award again in 2017 with a 10K victory at the World Championships, giving the Netherlands six titles since Edith van Dijk was named the first female SOY in 2005.

015 HIGHLIGHTING ISHOF’S 1980 OLYMPIC EXHIBIT
by Bruce Wigo
As we mark the 40th anniversary of the 1980 Olympic Games, much has been written and discussed about the impact on the athletes who were denied the opportunity to compete in Moscow. Lost in most of these discussions is the significance of the boycott to the Olympic movement, which is why, in 2014, the International Swimming Hall of Fame made it the subject of one of the largest permanent exhibits in its museum.

018 OLYMPIC HISTORY WITHIN REACH
by David Rieder
Despite the global pandemic, the Olympic postponement and a coaching change, Italy’s Gregorio Paltrinieri put together some of the best swimming of his career last summer in the 800 and 1500 meter freestyle as well as the 10K marathon. Come Tokyo 2021, he’ll be trying to become the first swimmer ever to capture Olympic gold in both the pool and open water events.

021 STILL SWIMMING STRONG
by Dan D’Addona
Throughout Allison Schmitt’s illustrious swimming career, the three-time Olympian and eight-time Olympic medalist has experienced success and has dealt with her share of struggles. Now 30, she remains goal-oriented and continues to be one of the world’s elite athletes.

026 THE TRUE OLYMPIC SPIRIT
by John Lohn
Pierre de Coubertin developed the Olympic motto that stressed athletic prowess, but he also said, “The most important thing in the Olympic Games is not winning, but taking part.” That description fit Eric the Eel Moussambani perfectly when he swam all by himself in Heat 1 of the men’s 100 meter freestyle at the Sydney Olympics in 2000 and finished in slightly less than two minutes!
