Swim Poll of the Week: Graduate Transfers, Yay or Nay?

This is the Swim Poll of the Week for Thursday, April 21, 2022, sponsored by Strechcordz Swim Training Products. In our last poll, we wanted to know: Should graduate swimmers stay with their undergraduate programs, or is transferring okay?

Swimmers using their last years of eligibility in a new program is nothing new. Most recently, Olympic swimmer Maggie Mac Neil announced she would be leaving Michigan for California as a graduate transfer.

USC also saw graduate transfer success with Calypso Sheridan. Sheridan left Northwestern and helped USC achieve great results at this year’s past PAC-12 championships.

The Texas men also had a graduate transfer bring them success this season. Cameron Auchinachie was a part of the winning 400 freestyle relay at NCAA’s this past year. Auchinachie transferred from the University of Denver and was a large influence in the sprinting group.

These three are not the first to be graduate transfers and certainly not the last. The two graduate transfers at their new programs certainly made a splash this past year. Mac Neil as well brings an impressive resume with her to the west coast. While she will be missed in the Big-10 it’s always exciting to see talent of that level shine in different conferences.

It really depends on the swimmer’s academic and athletic circumstances. For some, staying makes sense. For others, it’s a good chance to try something new in a new locale. They don’t owe anyone anything.
