The Minnesota Swimming & Diving program is welcoming its second new member to its coaching staff, as head coach Kelly Kremer announced Monday the hiring of new associate head coach Stacy Busack. The hiring is pending the completion of a background check.

“We are beyond excited to welcome Stacy back home to Minnesota,” said Kremer. “A Gopher through and through, she is an outstanding person and leader who will have a major positive impact on the lives of our student-athletes.”

Busack is no stranger to the Maroon and Gold, as she spent the entirety of her collegiate career as a member of the Golden Gophers from 2005-09. In that time, the Fergus Falls, Minn. native managed to accomplish a remarkable amount, including earning 13 All-American nods and four individual Big Ten titles, helping her team secure the 2008 Big Ten Conference Championship title, qualifying in two events for the 2008 Olympic Trials, setting 14 separate Minnesota school records (five of which still stand) and securing her spot in the 2015 class of the Minnesota Aquatic Center Hall of Fame.

Busack’s specialty as a swimmer came in the sprint freestyle category, with all 13 AA honors coming from either individual or relay-leg sprint free performances. Her sole current SCY Minnesota team record was set in the 100 free (48.08) as well, which she accomplished at the 2009 Big Ten Championships. That time also stood as the Big Ten Conference record for five years until it was bested in 2014.

In the classroom, Busack excelled during her time as a student-athlete as well, as she managed to rack up three Big-Ten All-Academic honors and an Academic All-American honor over her career.

After her four years as a student-athlete with the Gophers, Busack spent the next four years as a volunteer coach with Minnesota. Since then, she has spent time as an assistant coach at the University of Pittsburgh from 2013-16 and at Oakland University from 2016-19, before she was promoted to associate head coach for Oakland in 2019.

In her time with Oakland, Busack helped coach the Golden Grizzlies to being the perennial team in the Horizon League, securing the Horizon League Conference Championship title in each of her five seasons with the program for both the women’s and men’s teams.

“I am thrilled to come home to Minnesota and incredibly grateful to Coach Kremer and the athletic department for the opportunity to serve my Alma Mater and the Gopher student-athletes,” said Stacy Busack. “The ‘U’ has always held a special place in my heart and I am beyond excited to do my best to give back to the place that has given so much to me. Go Gophers!”
