Siobhan Haughey Makes It Three In Three & Lydia Jacoby Completes Breaststroke Double In Barcelona

Siobhan Haughey continued her golden form with two more victories to make it three in total at the Barcelona stop of the Mare Nostrum.

After winning the 100 free in 52.50 to go top of the rankings on the opening day, Haughey started her evening with her second title of the meet with victory in the one-length race in 24.67.

Behind her came Marrit Steenbergen (24.86) and Anna Hopkin who touched out Cate Campbell by 0.01 in 24.96 to 24.97.

Haughey’s time was 0.11 outside the Hong Kong record of 24.56 she set at the Canet stop on Sunday.

The 25-year-old returned to claim victory in the 200 free where she was 1.02secs ahead of Steenbergen after the opening length in 26.70.

She turned 1.79 ahead of the European champion at 150 and although Steenbergen made up 1.25secs on the final length, Haughey touched in 1:55.56.

Steenbergen claimed her third silver of the meet behind Haughey in a personal best 1:56.10, cutting 0.22 from her previous mark of 1:56.22 at last month’s Eindhoven Qualification Meet.

It was faster than the time in which she won the European title last year in Rome and was the ninth swiftest by a Dutchwoman, with only Femke Heemskerk swifter in domestic waters.

Ella Jansen added 200 bronze to her 400 title in 1:58.09 as the 17-year-old made it a successful stop in Barcelona.

Jacoby Completes Breaststroke Double

Lydia Jacoby came from 0.86 back at the 150 to overhaul Thea Blomsterberg with a final-length 36.80 and win the 200 breaststroke in 2:24.03.

The Dane was second in 2:24.50 with Ana Blazevic completing the podium in 2:26.58.

It was a second win of the Barcelona meet for the American who dominated the 100br on Wednesday.

Nicolo Martinenghi upgraded his 50 silver for 100 breaststroke gold in 59.98 after pulling away on the second lap.

The world champion was the only man inside a minute ahead of Jan Kalusowski (1:01.01) and Andrius Sidlauskas (1:01.30).

Commonwealth champion Lara van Niekerk went fourth in the 50br rankings in 30.21, 0.19 ahead of world champion Ruta Meilutyte (30.40) with Britain’s Imogen Clark in third (30.42).

Hansson Flies Past MacNeil

European champion Louise Hansson was 0.15 adrift of Maggie MacNeil at the halfway point in the 100 fly before a 30.39 second 50 propelled her past the Olympic gold medallist to take top spot in 57.52.

It was the Swede’s fourth-fastest time of the season led by her 57.00 from April’s Swim Open Stockholm.

MacNeil took second in 57.83 with her Canada teammate Katerine Savard next home in 58.77.

Krzysztof Chmielewski prevailed in a tight Barcelona battle for the men’s 200 fly, touching the wall in 1:56.26.

Arbidel Gonzalez Alvarez was second in 1:56.75, 0.03 ahead of world short-course bronze medallist Noe Ponti who was first at the final turn before being overhauled and finishing third in 1:56.78.

Szebasztian Szabo won the 50 fly in 23.33 with Michael Andrew locked out of the podium by one place in 23.63.

Hafnaoui Takes Second Title; Ceccon Wins 100 Free

Olympic champion Ayoub Hafnaoui added the 400 free to his 1500 topper in 3:47.13, his second-fastest time of the season.

Joris Bouchaut (3:49.47) was second with Dan Jervis – who was runner-up in the longest race in the Barcelona pool – third home in 3:50.95.

Thomas Ceccon was 0.27 behind Dylan Carter at halfway in the 100 free only for a second 50 of 25.37 to propel him past the Trinidad and Tobago swimmer and into the wall in 48.89.

Katsuhiro Matsumoto added silver to the 200 gold he won on Wednesday  in 49.04 with Carter third in 49.09.

Ceccon’s effort was inside his top-10 best times headed by his 48.05 at the Tokyo Olympics where he finished 12th in the semis.

Beatriz Dotti won the 1500 free in 16:10.37 ahead of Agostina Heinwho topped the 800 in Canet – with the Argentinian, born in 2008, clocking 16:14.19.

Ogata Back On Top In Barcelona

So Ogata added the men’s 200IM title to his Canet gold in 1:58.09 a day after finishing fourth in the long medley, won by Tomoyuki Matsushita in a Japanese clean sweep of the podium.

Matsushita was second on Thursday in 1:58.49 with Finlay Knox of Canada third in 1:59.12.

Nio Marita took control at the 300m mark of the women’s 400IM with victory her’s in 4:39.22 ahead of short medley winner Anastasia Gorbenko (4:40.76) and Boglarka Kapas (4:40.97).

Mora And Wilm Double Up

Lorenzo Mora came from fifth at the final turn to blast a 29.15 last 50 to add the 200 back to his 100 victory in 1:59.45.

The Italian was the only man inside 2mins and finished ahead of Commonwealth champion Brodie Williams (2:00.03) and Antoine Herlem (2:00.24).

Ingrid Wilm also doubled up, leading throughout to add the 100 backstroke to the 50 title she won on Wednesday in 1:00.02.

Miroslav Knedla won the men’s 50 back in 25.15.
