Seahawks’ DK Metcalf Found Love for Swimming Thanks to Russell Wilson

En route to the West Division title and a berth in the NFC playoffs, the Seattle Seahawks benefitted from the pool. An ESPN story on Friday highlighted the dynamic between quarterback Russell Wilson and wide receiver DK Metcalf, and how swimming has played a role in their relationship.

According to the ESPN article, which was written by Brady Henderson, Wilson has long used swimming as part of his postgame recovery program. So, when he and Metcalf ventured to Mexico for a training trip, Wilson planned a role for swimming in the program. One problem: Wilson was unaware that Metcalf did not know how to swim, a fact that surfaced on the way to Mexico.

Wilson was undeterred and gradually encouraged Metcalf to become more comfortable with the water. Over time, according to Henderson’s feature, Wilson taught Metcalf how to swim and the wideout found a love for the water. Metcalf now swims on his own and the sport is benefiting more than just Wilson.

In addition to Wilson teaching Metcalf how to swim and, therefore, making him water safe, they developed a stronger relationship as teammates, success that can be seen in the statistics produced by Metcalf this season. One of the premier physical specimens in the NFL, Metcalf capped the regular season with 83 receptions for 1,303 yards and 10 touchdowns.

Wilson found Metcalf with a pair of touchdown passes on Saturday, but the Seahawks were booted from the wild-card round of the NFC playoffs after suffering a 30-20 loss to the Los Angeles Rams.

This is so awesome. Would love to see this promoted to NCAA football programs. Then their athletic directors might see the benefit of swimming and swimming facilities and quit sacrificing olympic sports. #battletosavespartanswimanddive – parent of a Michigan State swimmer

What a great story, Metcalf now swims on his own for full body maintenance and health benefits. We can all learn from this story and encourage everyone we know to experience the benefits of swimming!
