Paralympics: Jiang Yuyan Sets World Record in Women’s S6 50 Butterfly Prelims

Paralympics: Jiang Yuyan Sets World Record in Women’s S6 50 Butterfly Prelims

Jiang Yuyan of China set the Paralympic record in the women’s S6 50-meter butterfly Monday in Tokyo.

Jiang clocked in at 34.56 seconds. She is the stop seed in the event by just under two seconds. Jiang held the world record at 34.86 seconds. She undercuts that and the Olympic record set in 2016 by Eleanor Robinson of Great Britain.

Behind Jiang, Elizabeth Marks set the America’s record in the S6 women’s 50 fly at 36.84. She’s the third seed in the final, behind Jiang and Nicole Turner. Robinson is the fourth seed in the final.

Jiang’s record is one of six Paralympic records set on Monday, Day 6 of the competition. Lu Dong, who set world and Paralympic records in the women’s S5 50 butterfly, set a Paralympic mark in the S5 50 back. She clocked in at 40.00 seconds to take the top seed. Her countryman Ruan Jingsong was fastest in the men’s S5 50 back at 32.27, downing the Paralympic mark.

The Netherlands’ Rogier Dorsman set the Paralympic record of 2:20.75 in the men’s SM11 200 individual medley at 2:20.75. The world-record holder was 11.3 seconds clear of the second-place finisher, Yang Bozun of China, whose Paralympic record from 2012 he took. Dorsman was within .35 seconds of his world record.

Argentina’s Pipo Carlomagno went 1:09.12 to set the pace in the men’s S7 100 back. His time is a Paralympic record and Americas record. He downed the mark set by Jonathan Fox of Great Britain in London in 2012 (1:09.86), and he’s within two tenths of the world record set by Ukraine’s Bohdan Hrynenko in 2019.

David Abrahams of the U.S. set the Americas record in the men’s SM13 200 individual medley with a time of 2:14.23. He already holds the American record in the SM13 100 breast, which is still to come at the Games. Abrahams qualified fifth in the final, but he’ll face a tough test to get on the medal stand in an event in which Belarus’s Ihar Boki, who has four golds at these Games already, is the top seed. Boki went 2:08.24 and holds the Paralympic (2:04.02) and world (2:03.79) records.

Mexico’s Fabiola Ramirez set the S2 Americas record in both the 100 freestyle (2:32.47) and the 50 free off the front of it (1:13.69). In that mixed event with S3 swimmers, she didn’t make the finals. The same is true for Turkey’s Elif Ildem, who set the S1 100 free Paralympic record at 3:17.54. American Leanne Smith is the top seed in that event final.
