Pac-12 Conference Champs, Day Four Finals: Cal Rallies To Capture Team Title

Day Four Finals, Houston Texas

Throughout the four days of the Pac-12 Conference Championships, Cal-Berkeley showed its power, most notably in a sweep of the relay events. But for much of the meet, the Bears trailed their Northern California rival, Stanford, which relied on a combination of up-top talent and depth. On the final day of action, Cal finally moved into the lead and captured the conference crown, ending the Cardinal’s four-year reign.

Cal was fueled on the last day of competition by Isabelle Stadden and Isabel Ivey, who led one-two finishes, respectively, in the 200 backstroke and 100 freestyle. Cal, guided by longtime coach Teri McKeever, totaled 1519.5 points, to the 1445 of Stanford.

“It means a lot,” McKeever said of the team title. “I’m just so incredibly proud of this group. I’m proud of every team here, of every coach here. This has been a challenge, like it has for a lot of people. I’m so appreciative to the conference that we were able to pull this off. It means the world to these young women and I’m so thrilled for them.”

200 Backstroke

For the majority of the meet, and despite Cal’s relay dominance, Stanford was on top of the team standings. That scenario changed following the 200 backstroke, as Isabelle Stadden won the event for Cal and fueled a major coup of points. Stadden claimed first place in 1:50.83 and was followed by teammate Alicia Wilson, who was second in 1:52.67. Taking fourth was Ayla Spitz in 1:53.21.

The Bears took a 5.5-point lead and were also aided by Tea Laughlin winning the consolation final. Utah’s Audrey Reimer placed third in 1:52.91 while Stanford received fifth- and sixth-place efforts from Alex Crisera and Janelle Rudolph.

200 Breaststroke

Kaitlyn Dobler might be best known for her speed in the breaststroke, but the USC freshman showed she has endurance, too, as she completed a breaststroke sweep with a victory in the 200 distance. Dobler covered her eight laps in 2:06.53 to take the win over Cal’s Ema Rajic, who touched in 2:07.19. Dobler actually trailed Rajic at the 150, but used a 32.81 split over the last 50 to reel in her opposition.

Stanford’s Allie Raab was third in 2:07.31 and teammates Zoe Bartel and Grace Zhao were fourth and seventh, respectively, to help the Cardinal in their chase of Cal. A key for the Bears was Ali Harrison placing sixth.
