NJAC Announces the Cancellation of Fall Sports Season

The New Jersey Athletic Conference announced its decision to cancel fall sports on Tuesday, albeit with the possibility that seasons will be conducted in the spring. Although swimming is a winter sport in the NJAC, the fact that the COVID-19 pandemic has wiped out another conference’s fall campaign is a concern for whether the winter season will be held.

As COVID-19 continues to rise in some states and maintains a presence throughout the country, the potential of any conferences holding fall seasons is in doubt. Come winter, six schools sponsor swimming in the NJAC: Ramapo, The College of New Jersey, Montclair State, William Patterson, Rowan and Kean (women).

“The NJAC will pursue every avenue within the NCAA governance structure to explore the provision of a competitive season for the fall sport student-athletes during the spring 2021 semester and allow them to engage in practice and training opportunities during the fall 2020 semester,” the conference said in a statement.

In addition to college conferences being forced to rearrange their schedules due to COVID-19, high school athletics organizations around the nation have been canceling or postponing their seasons to protect the health of student-athletes.

All of this makes me so sad for the kids. Meets could be virtual, practice can happen safely and decisions could have been made later. Bad form NJAC!
