NCAA Women’s Championships: Kaitlyn Dobler Aims to Defend 100 Breaststroke Title

The 2023 NCAA Division I Women’s Championships continued from Knoxville, Tennessee, on Friday with the Day 3 prelims session.

The Day 3 prelims session consists of the 400 IM, 100 butterfly, 200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke and 100 backstroke.

Here is a look at the 100 breaststroke.

The first circle-seeded heat saw Texas freshman Lydia Jacoby, the Olympic gold medalist in this event, was first to the wall in 57.98.

In the second seeded heat, Tennessee junior Mona McSharry, swimming in her home pool, pulled away late in her heat to get to the wall in 57.67.

The final heat saw defending NCAA champion Kaitlyn Dobler of USC use her quick stroke to go even faster and finish in 57.35 to take the top seed overall.

Dobler will lead the field into the NCAA finals (57.35) where she will look to defend her national title.

Texas junior Anna Elendt took the second seed in 57.49, followed by McSharry (57.67), Ohio State’s Josie Panitz (57.88), Jacoby (57.98), NC State’s Heather MacCausland (58.14), Ohio State senior Hannah Bach (58.52) and Virginia freshman Emma Weber (58.90).

Based on prelims, it looks like an intriguing race between the top five qualifiers. But Dobler remains the favorite to defend.
