Martinenghi’s time ranks behind only his PB of 58.75 at the Italian Winter Championships in December and the 59.01 from the 2017 World Junior Championships which still stands a WJR.

He now has three of the four fastest times in Italian history with Fabio Scozzoli‘s 2019 effort of 59.05 ranking third.

It concluded a fine competition for Martinenghi who had swum his second-fastest 50br on Saturday and by extension the second fastest by an Italian.

The 21-year-old posted a time of 26.68, 0.12secs outside his national record of 26.56 set in December.

Kamminga was second – 0.78secs adrift – in 27.46 with Alessandro Pinzuti rounding out the podium (27.59).

The three-time European short-course champion ended the meet with gold in the 200br in a meet mark of 2:09.35 and silver in the 50 and 100 behind Martinenghi.
